Broad Objectives:

A safety officer is responsible for the health and safety of staff in the workplace. The officer compiles safety programs, standardizes them to remain consistent, and shares best practice techniques at regular staff meetings.To ensure success as a safety officer, you must stay updated with the latest trends in health and safety and consistently implement these practices in the workplace. Ultimately, a top-notch safety officer will maintain compliance with all safety regulations and ensure that every member of staff complies with the regulated standards.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular site visits to projects to review whether safe practices are being followed.
  • Compile safety programs & documents required for sites.
  • Hold and document regular Toolbox meetings.
  • Practice safe working techniques.
  • Implement and maintain health and safety standards.
  • Establish a cordial and professional relationship with employees.
  • Maintain compliance with all safety regulations.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings to share best practice techniques.
  • Standardize health and safety in order to remain consistent.
  • Identify hazardous waste and dispose of it correctly.
  • Promote safety initiatives.
  • Compile and maintain relevant registers to ensure compliance.
  • Document staff information, minutes of meetings, and reports compiled for management.
  • Regularly inspect equipment.
  • Support the development of OHS policies and programs
  • Advise and instruct on various safety-related topics (noise levels, use of machinery etc.)
  • Conduct risk assessment and enforce preventative measures
  • Review existing policies and measures and update them according to legislation
  • Initiate and organize OHS training of employees and executives
  • Inspect premises and the work of personnel to identify issues or non-conformity (e.g. not using protective equipment)
  • Oversee installations, maintenance, disposal of substances, etc.
  • Stop any unsafe acts or processes that seem dangerous or unhealthy
  • Record and investigate incidents to determine causes and handle worker’s compensation claims
  • Prepare reports on occurrences and provide statistical information to upper management

Qualifications And Skills:

  • A bachelor’s degree or an associate degree.
  • Valid competency certificates.
  • Registration as a Health and Safety Officer.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in this position.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Applications.
  • Proven experience as a safety officer
  • In-depth knowledge of legislation (e.g. OSHA/EPA) and procedures
  • Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices
  • Experience in writing reports and policies for health and safety
  • Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics
  • Proficient in MS Office; Working knowledge of safety management information systems is a plus
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Diligent with great attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present and explain health and safety topics
  • BSc/BA in safety management, engineering or a relevant field is preferred
  • Certificate in occupational health and safety
