JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of the respective Division Head as Clinical Supervisor and the Head of the Local Department of Surgery, this role involves providing clinical medical services as part of the Clinical Assistant Program. Taking place in a variety of settings, the Clinical Assistant responsibilities include but are not limited to providing surgical assistance, as well as pre- and post-operative care to hospitalized patients in conjunction with the attending physician. To ensure adequate surgical service coverage, the Clinical Assistant participates in an on-call rotation during statutory holidays, weekends, and evenings in which surgical inpatient services are provided. The Clinical Assistant is called upon to work in close collaboration with the members of the Department of Surgery of his or her assigned hospital. He or she is also required to work with various healthcare professionals, as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Hold an eligibility letter for a Clinical Assistant's license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick (CPSNB).

To be eligible for a Clinical Assistant's license, the physician must:

  • Have acquired a degree from a recognized medical school and residency leading to a licence to practise medicine, which meets the following criteria:
  • Accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) (in the United States);

OR

  • Listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with a note for Canada;
  • Be awarded a title of Licentiates of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) or an acceptable alternative as described in the Acceptable Alternatives to the LMCC Policy;
  • Have acquired a minimum of 450 hours of independent and unsupervised approved clinical practice or training in the last five (5) years;
  • Must have acquired two (2) years of postgraduate training and one year (1) licensed independent, unsupervised practice experience;

OR

  • Have acquired one (1) year postgraduate training and two (2) years licensed;
  • independent, unsupervised practice experience;
  • Be a member of the New Brunswick Medical Society (NBMS);
  • Hold privileges with the Vitalité Health Network;
  • Be registered with New Brunswick Medicare;
  • Active membership in the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) or an association offering equivalent liability insurance;
  • Maintain appropriate annual Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements;
  • Comply with Department of Surgery Policies and Procedures and Medical Staff Bylaws;
  • Comply with all provisions of the Hospital Act, SNB 1992, c H-6.1, the Regional Health Authorities Act, RSNB 2011, c 217, the Community Health Centres Regulation, NB Reg 2002-87, the Medical Services Payment Act, RSNB 1973, c M-7, and their regulations;
  • Follow the Code of Ethics of the CPSNB and the Canadian Medical Association (CMA);
  • Basic Clinical Skills;
  • Ability and willingness to work as part of a Clinical Team;
  • Sense for organization and responsibility;
  • Ability for time management and prioritization;
  • Specific skills and knowledge relevant to the intended clinical placement;
  • Ability for clinical decision-making;
  • Ability for appropriate utilization of clinical and diagnostic resources;
  • Prescription and clinical documentation writing;
  • Knowledge of any required procedures which may evolve over time (with the ability to demonstrate such knowledge during assessments);
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member;
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned work;
  • Good work history (performance and attendance);
  • Adherence to professional ethics principles, to the Network management philosophy and organizational values;
  • Adherence to the rules of confidentiality set forth by Vitalité Health Network.
