Overview

We are looking for an experienced candidate to join our Sectors Team and lead efforts in the Digital Technology sector while delivering on our mandate of creating business opportunities for Canadian exporters and investors. The tech sector for EDC continues to evolve as a key horizontal that spans all industry value chains and more specifically developments in AI, data centres, Internet of Things (IoT) and overall digital infrastructure.

In the role of the Global Trade Director (GTD), the successful candidate will leverage their extensive professional networks, business development skills, industry expertise, and deep knowledge of Canadian capabilities to develop and maintain relevant industry sector strategies and generate and nurture new export business opportunities for Canadian companies.

The successful candidate will have deep industry knowledge in digital technology and a broad understanding of the industries in which these emerging technologies can be deployed. They will have a strong understanding of the Canadian ecosystem, an existing network within the sector and an ability to understand Canadian companies’ product offerings, technical capabilities, competitive advantages and relevant value propositions.

The GTD is accountable for participating in industry events, facilitating the introductions of Canadian companies to international opportunities, and providing recommendations on Canadian capabilities related to targeted international supply chains. Additionally, the GTD will take a leadership role in executing and communicating the Sector Team’s tech strategy both internally and externally.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain relevant industry sector strategies for EDC taking into consideration relevant Canadian expertise and industry growth trends and opportunities
  • Provide deep expertise on the business and technical capabilities and competitiveness of Canadian companies and identify “best in class” companies for priority support
  • Represent the voice of the Canadian companies with regards to presenting Canadian solutions to the business needs and requirements of EDC’s international business networks and customers
  • Work with various EDC teams and external partners to keep current on emerging Canadian technologies and Canadian expertise and gather market intelligence in specified sectors of expertise to augment and maintain relevant industry sector strategies
  • Contribute to the corporate strategy and lead positioning in the ecosystem on behalf of EDC
  • Establish and lead internal and external virtual teams including sector associations, innovation hubs and government partners to complement priorities and activities
  • Through deep relationships developed with targeted Canadian companies, identify and facilitate introductions to internal EDC colleagues that can provide additional support through other relevant EDC products and services
  • Collaborate with colleagues to maximize multi-sector trade creation activities with foreign buyers and prospects
  • Work closely with EDC teams to coordinate a shared understanding and initiative alignment to achieve results across a variety of programs

Screening Criteria

  • Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Engineering or equivalent professional designation in relevant discipline
  • Minimum 8 years of combined business development and technical advisory experience in the relevant sector/area of responsibility
  • Advanced knowledge of best practices in sales and/or account management
  • Demonstrated experience presenting to executive teams and strategy development to support the Canadian tech ecosystem
  • Well-developed and deep professional network and strong technical and business knowledge acquired through directly relevant business activity
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a matrix organization and lead virtual teams

Asset

  • Bilingual in both official languages (English and French)

Salary Range

  • Business Development 19: Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $107,132 to $142,842 plus a performance-based incentive.

Location

  • Export Development Canada is a hybrid work environment.
  • This role may be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa, or from a Community Hub in Toronto, Kitchener, Montreal, Calgary or Vancouver.
