The incumbent will be responsible for advising the Mayor and their staff on all community relations and outreach matters while building relationships on the Mayor’s behalf.

The outreach component of the job will require the Advisor to engage in offsite visits, with a diverse range of stakeholder groups and attend various meetings and off-hour events relevant to the position. In addition, the Advisor is accountable for responding to emails and calls that have been referred by the Constituent Assistant or reception.

When requested, the incumbent will provide policy advice and counsel to the Mayor, and regularly through the Chief of Staff.

The Advisor will be responsible for building a network of contacts with community organizations, business groups, not-for-profit agencies, neighbourhood associations, etc.

The Advisor will be expected to provide interpretation of social policy development, research and performance indicators with the primary focus on constituent relations and outreach issues within the Greater Hamilton Area.

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Develop and foster positive working relationships and networking opportunities with both internal contacts and a diverse range of external community groups and organizations.
  • Together with the Mayor’s team, lead all outreach assignments and provide project objectives, terms of reference, needs/impact assessments and consultation with relevant stakeholders in order to ensure clarity, consistency and accessibility of the actions to be carried out.
  • Manage internal and cross-departmental projects with a constituent relations or outreach development focus ensuring that assigned projects are delivered on time and on budget.
  • Assist the Senior Communications Advisor in the development and maintenance of a robust media outreach strategy.
  • Identify and investigate priorities for community partnership programs ensuring consistency with corporate policies, the Mayor’s office priorities, and strategic directions.
  • Co-ordinate and write event scenarios, briefing notes, greeting letters, and position papers; assist in planning processes to support strategic directions, short- and long-term planning initiatives as they pertain to constituent relations, outreach, and the overall strategic plan as set forth by the Mayor’s Office. As required, make recommendations to the Mayor and regularly to the Chief of Staff.
  • The Community Engagement Advisor is responsible for all aspects of coordinating and organizing the Order of Hamilton nominations and awards program.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze major proposals, research, and develop solutions by using a broad knowledge required at the university level of education normally acquired through the completion of a degree in a related discipline or a combination of education and related work experience. Previous experience and knowledge in community and constituent relations and outreach practices. Ability to work both independently and within a team setting; ability to work under pressure and to produce deliverables under imposed deadlines.
  • High level of communication skills, with particular emphasis on empathy, excellent writing ability; experience in a computerized environment; working knowledge of Word, Excel, database software, etc.
  • In depth knowledge of Hamilton’s various cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Sound interpersonal skills, high level of sensitivity, and demonstrated good judgement, solid knowledge of constituent relations and development of best outreach practices.
