Role and Facility Information

Within the context of a patient and family-centered model of care, and in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions of Providence Health Care (“Providence”), is seeking a Physiatrist to provide coverage clinical services in the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) at Providence Health Care sites, including: a) St. Paul’s Hospital [SPH] Complex Pain clinic; b) Acute care; and c) Rotations on the Holy Family Rehab inpatient service. The start date is July 2024 or earlier, if suitable candidates are found.

The core purpose of the Providence Health Care [PHC] Division of PM&R is “to optimize care and function for people and populations experiencing impairments, diseases, or disabilities, while innovating to provide quality clinical care, research, and education”. Currently, the PHC Division of PMR provides a full spectrum of consultative care in acute care, rehabilitation units, long-term care, and outreach settings.

Forward-looking, there are opportunities to grow in the clinical, research, and education domains as detailed in the recent Division of PM&R strategic plan. There are opportunities to collaborate even further for multi-specialty care, which will be particularly relevant leading up to the New St. Paul’s Hospital. Secondly, there is active development of a Rehabilitation Research and Innovation Lab at Holy Family Hospital [HFH] in a team-based setting, with extensive opportunities to partner with Providence Research and other research institutions.

Finally, there is an expectation of mentorship and training as appropriate to PHC residents, as well as opportunities to further the education goals for medical students and rehabilitation staff.

Position Summary

St. Paul’s Hospital Complex Pain Clinic

The SPH Pain Management Program was established in 1985. With a continued interest in treating chronic pain patients, the program developed over the years into a true multidisciplinary team consisting of the following services: Anesthesiology, Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Psychiatry, and Allied Health (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychology). From the inception to present, the program at SPH has continued to grow and expand, making a name as a leader in innovative methods of treatment for those battling with chronic pain. The program now resides under the Department of Surgery, headed by Anesthesiology, and continues to be supported by a multidisciplinary team of clinicians. The role of the Physiatrist would be in the outpatient clinics for assessment and diagnostics, a multidisciplinary approach to care, as well as evidence-based non-interventional and interventional management strategies. There may be additional needs based upon opportunities such as research and education.

Acute Care Consultations

The extensive acute care Physiatry consultative services occur at SPH, Mount St. Joseph’s Hospital [MSJ], and other partnering institutions such as Vancouver General Hospital [VGH] amongst others. Responsibilities include the management of Physiatric-related diagnoses and impairments, as well as rehabilitation planning.

Holy Family Hospital Rehabilitation

PHC includes one of the largest specialized rehabilitation facilities in BC at HFH, with both inpatient and outpatient multidisciplinary services. The 65-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit focuses on the delivery of specialized multidisciplinary rehabilitation of the older adult with neurological (mostly stroke), orthopedic, and amputee/prosthetic needs. Physiatrists work in partnership with the admitting family physicians and the multidisciplinary team to support each patients’ journey throughout their inpatient admission.

Qualifications

The successful candidates will have an FRCPC in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and be certified or be eligible for licensure by the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons. Preference will be given to those candidates with an interest and experience in the rehabilitation of the older adults with complex medical needs and/or additional sub-specialty training in Pain Medicine.
