Queen's EoT Chapter Volunteer

Engineering Society of Queen's University

Date: 2 weeks ago
City: Kingston, ON
Contract type: Full time
Engineers of Tomorrow (EoT) is a non-profit organization that matches engineers with classrooms across Canada to teach youth about engineering. The EoT Queen's Chapter is the first ever university branch of the organization that has now been ratified under EngSoc, and we aim to propagate this initiative using outreach to teens and high school students!

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about changing the messages youth receive about engineering. You will be responsible for teaching high school students about the profession with your own creative twist, communicating with a class teacher, and creating a lesson plan centred around your engineering topic.

Our volunteers are enthusiastic leaders who can present concepts that motivate and inspire the next generation of engineers. This position is meant to be a unique experience to translate the lessons we learn now into tangible activities for teens. No experience is required, but you should be able to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences!

As a volunteer, you will also get the chance to network with some of the Engineers-In-Residence (EIR) volunteers under EoT directly, work with other community initiators, and develop career competencies that are vital in your professional and personal life.

EoT Chapter Volunteer Responsibilities Are

  • Being aware of volunteer opportunities provided by the chapter.
  • Reaching out to a high school teacher (in Kingston or in your home city depending on location) and scheduling a classroom visit.
  • Creating a lesson plan centred around engineering (any topic you'd like!)
  • Communicating with the chapter frequently about you're lesson schedule.
  • Communicating with the teacher frequently to organize and streamline the classroom visit.
  • Exercising empathy, patience, and open-mindedness during your visit (and beyond!)

Applications to be a volunteer close September 13th at 11:59pm! (The application does NOT include an interview.) Happy applying!
