The Senior Advisor, Labour Relations will support end-to-end labour relations for the Sobey’s supply chain operations function nationally as well as 40+ owned and franchised retail stores in Quebec. They will work cross-functionally within the business to effectively manage all labour relations, union negotiations and abatement for national supply chain operations and Quebec retail stores.

Here’s Where You’ll Be Focusing

  • Act as primary negotiator in management and union contracts involving multiple bargaining units, administrating and interpreting multiple union contracts
  • Prepare for and appear in arbitration and Labour Relation Board hearings
  • Partner with Operations and HR Business Partners to ensure responsible application of the Collective Agreements
  • Work with Union Representatives and Business Partners to resolve grievances and legal matters
  • Support labour strategies that are consistent with and support the organization’s short- and long-term direction
  • Monitor labour relation issues throughout organization and ensure that management activities are properly aligned with the Company's philosophy of maintaining and practicing open and direct lines of communication with all employees
  • Ensure employees have a clear understanding of such philosophies and are able to exercise them
  • Manage the legal and regulatory process relating to all employment related claims working closely with legal counsel as required
  • Provide advice and guidance to management and staff on labour relations concerns and opportunities related to the employee engagement component of Sobeys
  • Mitigate risks to the business through effective application of legislation and Sobeys Human Resources policies

What You Have To Offer

  • Post-secondary education in Industrial/Labour Relations or related equivalent education
  • 10+ years of experience negotiating and managing relationships with a multitude of labor unions in Canada. Strong knowledge of employment related laws and contracts
  • Bilingual (French/English verbal and written is required) The candidate will be expected to work with peers in other provinces in the development, development and implementation of tools and processes across Canada, as well as provide support to Sobeys employees across Canada
  • Experience working for a large retailer or a complex, matrix organization of scale comparable to Empire’s workforce
  • Alternative Dispute and Conflict Resolution and/or Advanced Mediation and Workplace Conflict Coaching Certification and/or training is an asset
  • Knowledge of the procedures, practices and techniques used in collective bargaining and labour management negotiations - actual bargaining experience is a must
  • Full understanding and demonstrated working knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g., Employment Standards, Ontario Labour Relations Act, Quebec Labour Standards, CNESST, Human Rights Code, etc.)
  • Strong communicator with the ability to articulate and frame up executive level material succinctly and simply
  • Ability to travel twice a month
