THE OPPORTUNITY

As a Respiratory Therapist, you will report to the Clinical Services Manager and be responsible for assessing and treating patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary disorders. This role includes performing diagnostic tests, developing and implementing treatment plans, and administering therapies such as oxygen and mechanical ventilation. You will monitor patient progress, document care in the Meditech system, and collaborate with healthcare professionals to optimize patient care. Additionally, you will maintain and calibrate respiratory equipment, educate patients and families on respiratory management, and participate in community outreach programs.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Evaluate patients’ respiratory conditions through physical examinations and diagnostic tests (e.g., spirometry, arterial blood gas analysis).
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in consultation with physicians.
  • Administer respiratory therapies, including aerosol medications, chest physiotherapy, and mechanical ventilation.
  • Perform bronchopulmonary drainage and assist patients with breathing exercises.
  • Operate and maintain respiratory therapy equipment, such as ventilators and oxygen concentrators.
  • Ensure proper sterilization and functionality of all respiratory equipment.
  • Educate patients and their families about respiratory conditions and management techniques.
  • Provide guidance on the use of respiratory equipment and home care practices.
  • Provide emergency respiratory care, including artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Respond to respiratory emergencies and provide critical care support.
  • Work closely with other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient progress and treatment plans.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including treatment plans and progress notes.
  • Report any changes in patient conditions to the appropriate medical staff.
  • Adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in respiratory care and treatment protocols.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the development of best practices in respiratory care.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new respiratory therapists and other healthcare staff.


QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience, and academic preparation:

  • Current certificate of registration in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario and the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists
  • Recent experience in an acute care facility including ED and ICU
  • Proven ability to adapt to a fast-paced and changing environment
  • Must be able to fulfill all physical requirements of the job, as per current Physical Demands Analysis
  • Must meet expectations for appropriate, respectful, and professional conduct, as set out in the GBGH Code of Conduct
  • Demonstrated commitment to exceptional customer service
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively using both oral and written format with patients, families, colleagues, and the interprofessional team
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and within a team setting
  • Demonstrated excellent problem-solving ability, critical thinking, and organizational skills
  • Commitment to professional growth and development of self and others
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (A.C.L.S.)
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history

COMPENSATION

  • Hourly rate of pay is $38.35 – 53.28, up to an additional 14% in lieu of benefits and 6% in lieu of vacation to start.

HOURS OF WORK

Temporary full-time up to 12 months. Must be available to work shifts including days, evenings, nights, and weekends. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the OPSEU collective agreement.
