Position Description:

The Research Assistant reports to the Manager and Senior Research Associate, Research, Evaluation and Education, and is responsible for carrying out the activities related to program evaluation and development. The focus of this position is supporting the development and evaluation of a harm reduction program for adults with developmental disability (DD) living in Toronto region and select communities in Northern Ontario who engage in problematic substance use.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Carrying out a literature search on harm reduction and justice involvement among adults with developmental disabilities and abstracting and interpreting the information
  • Supporting program development and evaluation activities, including needs assessment, data collection, analysis, and reporting
  • Maintain organized data
  • Conducting statistical analysis, using SPSS or other statistical packages, when necessary
  • Preparing draft reports, presentations and articles (for submission to journals, conferences, etc.)


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in a health, allied health, or related field
  • Two years of research experience in a health, allied health, or related environment
  • Experience writing literature reviews and annotated bibliographies
  • Knowledge and experience with adults with DD and the developmental sector
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and sensitivity to, the impact of social, economic, environmental, and cultural issues on diverse communities
  • Knowledge of harm reduction strategies is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodology
  • Strong organizational and collaboration skills
  • Strong communication skills, verbally and in writing, including email communication
  • Ability to manage time with overlapping priorities and multiple areas of responsibility
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience with Dedoose, NVIVO, or other qualitative analysis software
  • Experience with SPSS or other statistical analysis software
  • Masters degree with a major research project is considered an asset
  • Fluency in French is considered an asset
