We are currently seeking a project position full time Social Work Assistant to join our Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at the Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) in beautiful Kelowna, B.C. This project position is until March 31, 2025.

What will you work on?

The Social Work Assistant will work on the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit of Kelowna General Hospital alongside the unit Social Workers to support the care of the patients. This position reports to the Social Work Professional Practice Leader in Central Okanagan

The Social Work Assistant provides support services in the admission and discharge of patients/residents/clients and provides ongoing social service support.

Some Typical Duties And Responsibilities

  • Interviews patients/residents/clients having financial and/or social difficulties, obtains additional information as required from a variety of sources such as family and clinical staff, refers patients/residents/clients and/or family to a Social Worker and/or other appropriate resources as required.
  • Provides support services in the admission and discharge of patients/residents/clients such as providing orientation to a facility/program and its services, arranging for placement in alternative facilities/programs, arranging in-home assistance, advising families and community agencies of the discharge and making travel and other arrangements.
  • Provides practical support to clients to navigate and access social service and health systems by methods such as assisting clients with completing and submitting print and online forms and applications, writing letters, obtaining necessary consent, liaising with community resources, arranging transportation, providing clients with information regarding programs that they have applied to and outlining discharge plans and related next steps.
  • Co-ordinates patient's/resident's/client’s financial arrangements, including bank deposits, comfort allowances, collecting co-insurance charges and updating medical plans.
  • Responds to general inquiries, refers callers to internal and external resources such as health teams, physicians, community and government agencies.
  • Completes and maintains related records and reports such as checklists, housing applications, and statistics.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Scheduling Information

Shift times are from 08:30 to 16:30 hours.
