Canada Managing Director - Fully Remote Bookkeeping Firm
BooksTime
Date: 2 weeks ago
City: Toronto, ON
Contract type: Full time
Remote
This is a remote position.
About BooksTime:
BooksTime is an ambitious bookkeeping firm serving US-based clients. After 8 years of growth and hundreds of happy clients, we’re looking to build on our success by expanding into the Canadian market. Therefore, we are seeking a visionary co-founder for our Canadian operations.
The bookkeeping industry is changing fast. As remote work becomes more popular, small businesses can benefit from working with the best bookkeepers – no matter where in the world they are located. However, most small business owners don’t know how to find and effectively manage overseas talent. That’s where BooksTime comes in.
BooksTime currently has operations in 5 countries: the US, where we’re headquartered, as well as Georgia, the Philippines, UAE, and Ukraine.
With a global model, we can hire the best bookkeepers in the world, pay them good wages, and because of lower costs of living abroad, still offer extremely affordable prices to clients.
Traditional bookkeeping firms are inefficient, expensive, and often provide subpar service. By leveraging modern automation and AI tech, as well as our remote, global workforce, BooksTime is able to deliver higher quality bookkeeping at prices every business can afford.
About the Opportunity in Canada:
Given the many similarities between the Canada and US markets, we expect BooksTime’s model to work extremely well in Canada. Just as in the US, in Canada:
As Managing Director for BooksTime Canada, you will be responsible for establishing and expanding our presence in Canada. This is a hands-on role requiring a pragmatic leader who doesn’t mind delving into the day-to-day details.

About the Opportunity in Canada:
Given the many similarities between the Canada and US markets, we expect BooksTime’s model to work extremely well in Canada. Just as in the US, in Canada:
- There is a major shortage of accounting talent.
- Demand for accounting services continues to rise.
- Demand is relatively resilient to economic fluctuations, given that bookkeeping is a need that always exists for every business in every industry.
- Many bookkeeping services have so far focused primarily on the US market, neglecting Canada.
- The Canadian market is large, with 1.2 million small to midsized employer firms.
- The vast majority of those businesses are small enough that it is not economical for them to hire an in-house bookkeeper.
- The competitive landscape among bookkeeping firms is very attractive.
As Managing Director for BooksTime Canada, you will be responsible for establishing and expanding our presence in Canada. This is a hands-on role requiring a pragmatic leader who doesn’t mind delving into the day-to-day details.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the chief executive for the Canadian business unit. Oversee all aspects of Canadian operations, including legal, HR, marketing, sales, service management, and operations.
- Serve as a key leader in BooksTime’s global organization.
- Coordinate with BooksTime’s teams in other countries to leverage shared staff and resources related to as IT, recruiting, service provision, and more.
- Build a training program for current bookkeepers on Canadian bookkeeping.
- Adapt and implement BooksTime’s proven US business model for the Canadian market.
- Develop and execute a marketing strategy to attract Canadian clients.
- Ensure all Canadian operations comply with local laws and regulations, including tax compliance.
- Most of all: provide leadership and vision to build and scale the Canadian branch.
- Quickly build a scalable marketing and sales pipeline to bring in hundreds (and later, thousands) of Canadian clients.
- Ensure our service team has the training they need to deliver excellent bookkeeping services to Canadian clients.
- Maintain a stellar reputation for the BooksTime brand in Canada – among both clients and employees.
Qualifications:
- Expertise in Canadian Accounting: Extensive knowledge of Canadian bookkeeping and tax regulations relevant to small businesses. Chartered Public Accountant (CPA) preferred but not required.
- Proven Leadership Skills: Must have excellent track record of managing people. Several strong references from happy employees and colleagues will be requested, and will be key to hiring decisions. Experience as CEO, COO, CFO, startup founder, or in similar roles is preferred.
- Growth Driver: Demonstrated ability to drive major growth and impact in previous roles.
- Independent Worker: Capable of working autonomously and taking significant decisions.
- Pragmatic Visionary: Able to both dream big, but also to execute plans effectively to make those dreams a reality.
- Relationship Builder: Excellent networking and interpersonal skills. This is a reputation and connection based business.
- Experienced: The number of years is not the most important factor – we’re looking for someone with a clear track record of driving huge growth and impact. That said, the minimum is 5 years of relevant work experience. If faced with a choice between 5 years of exceptional performance and 25 years of “pretty good” performance, we’ll take the exceptional performer every time.
- Tech-Savvy: A general interest in learning and using the latest tech is important. Additionally, experience in QuickBooks Online and/or Xero would be a plus.
English is the only language required for this position. However, fluency in any of the following languages would be a plus:
- French
- Ukrainian
- Russian
- Georgia
- Filipino / Tagalog
- 20 Days Starting PTO
- Health Insurance Reimbursement
- Company Computer
- Tech Reimbursement
