Course Number and Title: CDN198H1S – Canada, Colonialism and Settler Relations


Course Description: A First Year Foundations seminar focused on exploring Canada's colonial history and recent efforts to enact appropriate settler relations through an interdisciplinary lens. Topics will include contemporary land claims and treaty-making processes, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, governmental apologies for the mistreatment of Indigenous peoples, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, land acknowledgements, practices of allyship through social movement such as Idle No More, and efforts to influence Canada's overseas mining practices.

Class Schedule: Thursdays, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm**

Sessional Dates of Appointment: 1 January 2025 to 30 April 2025 (Winter semester)


Salary: $9,457.90 (Sessional Lecturer1)
$9,930.79 (Sessional Lecturer 1 – Long Term)
$10,121.77 (Sessional Lecturer 2)
$10,326.62 (Sessional Lecturer 2 – Long Term)
$10,362.76 (Sessional Lecturer 3)
$10,570.02 (Sessional Lecturer 3 – Long Term)

Minimum Qualifications: A Master’s degree in the Social Sciences or Humanities is required.


Preferred Qualifications: Completed PhD or PhD in progress is preferred. Demonstrated research and/or teaching expertise on issues relating to Canadian colonialism, past or present, is preferred. University level teaching experience is preferred. Demonstrated evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching is preferred.

Description of Duties: Normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of all assignments; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours.
