Course Number and Title: UNI101H1S – Citizenship in the Canadian City


Course Description: Who belongs? Who governs? Who decides? In this course, you will examine the concepts of citizenship, public space, political membership, civic responsibility, and belonging. You will address topics such as Indigenous sovereignty claims, urban multiculturalism, public housing, and greening the city.

Salary: $9,457.90 (Sessional Lecturer1)

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree required in relevant field or discipline in the Social Sciences or Humanities (including, but not limited to Geography, Sociology, English, History, etc.).


Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated evidence of research and/or public engagement on themes relating to urban environments, socio-political responsibility and/or citizenship is preferred. Demonstrated teaching experience and expertise with respect to a similar university-level course is preferred.

Description of Duties: Normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments, tests, and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours. In addition, this course is integrated in the UC One program. This means that there are several group activities, joint assignments and a pre-planned cumulative, group assignment. The course instructor must be able to work as a team with the other instructors.
