  • This position provides the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays each week, with the requirement to report to the primary NOVA Chemicals work location on Tuesdays through Thursdays. Employees can opt out of the hybrid schedule and will be expected to work Monday-Friday from the primary work location.

NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.


We are seeking an innovative and dedicated Research Scientist to join our Polyethylene Products Research and Development (R&D) team at our Centre for Applied Research in Calgary, Alberta. In this role you will develop innovative new polyethylene products in support of NOVA Chemicals’ target markets using an array of manufacturing capabilities available at NOVA Chemicals.


You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Design new resins and generate models to predict product performance from the molecular level to the macroscopic level.
  • Prepare patent landscapes on new resin architectures and capture intellectual property.
  • Seek novel uses for polyethylene in rigid applications, including material substitution, application redesign, and improving the sustainability of polyethylene-based applications.
  • Represent NOVA Chemicals as a solutions provider through meetings with customers and presence at conferences and tradeshows.
  • Work cross-functionally with process R&D, manufacturing, marketing, technical service, sales and others, to ensure technical developments are aligned with market focused strategy.


What We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelor of Science/Engineering degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering or Polymer Chemistry with 5-7 years of related experience or entry level Ph.D.
  • Solid understanding of polymer structure-property relationships as well as polyolefin reaction and process technology, preferably with experience in designing new polyolefin-based resins for various packaging applications.
  • Polymer science knowledge of the different materials used in rigid and flexible packaging, including, but not limited to polypropylene, polyamide, polyvinylidene chloride, polyolefin plastomers, polyolefin elastomers, as well as ethylene vinyl alcohol and ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers, would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate customer needs into new resin designs.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship skills, presentation skills, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask, to use creativity in problem-solving and to deliver innovative solutions for the marketplace.
  • Excellent team player who will participate in a cross functional team of R&D technologists, scientists and engineers, technical service specialists and marketing professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities in a positive and productive manner.
  • Effective team interactions with willingness to learn from peers.
  • Strong customer focus with a desire to use technical advancements to achieve business results.
  • Ability to work effectively and independently, with an unrelenting commitment to safety.

Additional Information:

  • Relocation will be considered for this position
  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
  • This role requires up to 10% travel and the successful candidate must be eligible to travel easily between Canada and the United States
