Do you have genuine interest in considering energy efficiency, sustainability and climate change in your designs? Have you coordinated or led projects, preferably in the commercial and institutional sectors? If this sounds like you, we invite you to explore this career opportunity with us!

About the Role

Mechanical Engineers/Designers at Prism are technical designers who perform comprehensive building system upgrades. They have general project management skills as they will be involved in all the different project stages namely, response to Requests for Proposals (RFPs), systems analyses, detailed design, procurement services, and construction oversight. They interact directly with owners and architects and work collaboratively with team members coming from various engineering disciplines and third parties to propose and deliver effective, value-adding solutions.

Individuals at the Intermediate level apply their practical knowledge typically obtained through an equivalent of 6-10 years of work experience. They work independently with general supervision, manage small- to medium- sized projects, and solve problems that are difficult but typically not complex. They may influence others within the job area through explanation of facts, policies, and practices.

Individuals at the Senior level apply advanced knowledge typically obtained through more than 10 years of work experience. They manage larger projects and processes, working independently with limited supervision; coach and review the work of more junior professionals; and solve problems that are difficult and sometimes complex.

Following are the areas of responsibility.

Building Systems Design

  • Conduct of conceptual designs and detailed cost estimates for building system upgrades, development of business cases and preparation of client reports
  • Carrying out detailed design of building systems, applying engineering knowledge in the preparation of technical specifications and documentation and in using theories and calculations to arrive at solutions
  • Preparing tender documentation for procurement of equipment and installation, in coordination with owners on requirements
  • Ensuring that construction and implementation are carried out within agreed project timelines, in coordination with owners and constructors. Carrying out field reviews, reviewing documents during construction and providing instructions and solutions to the problems to ensure the project is constructed per design intent and Owner’s requirements.

Project Management

  • Managing projects and phases. This includes resource planning, budgeting, change management, scope management, schedule and contingency planning and resolution.
  • Providing guidance and supervision to more junior members of the team.

Marketing and Business Development

  • Preparing technical responses to Requests for Proposal (RFP’s)
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with Prism’s key clients and managing key accounts
  • Promoting the team's and wider Prism services (i.e. cross-services marketing) to existing and potential clients

This is a 40-hour per week salaried position, with options for flexible working. The candidate must have the ability to travel locally with occasional trips to other BC communities and provinces across Canada.

The salary range is $90,000 to $120,000. We will consider your level of experience and responsibilities, competencies, and unique offering to our team.

Qualifications and Experience

The following qualifications, experience and competences are considered major assets:

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) Certification
  • Experience in detailed mechanical building systems design, preferably in a professional services/engineering consulting environment
  • Considerable range of exposure to various types of facilities (strong exposure to commercial- and institutional-type projects preferred) and systems (HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression)
  • Project management skills and experience
  • Applied knowledge of energy efficiency, sustainability and climate change considerations in designs and/or experience in Facility / Building Condition Assessments
  • Skilled application of AutoCAD drafting software (Revit modelling experience also an asset)
