Job Summary
The Traffic Management Unit oversees total project delivery for municipal works, including preparation of preliminary, functional and detailed designs for intersection modifications to municipal roads to reduce delays and congestion or to enable traffic control signals to operate effectively and efficiently, as well as the preparation of related tendering, contract drawings and documents, management and/or coordination of construction activities, and the preparation of as-built drawings.
You are responsible for reviewing and preparing pavement drawings; developing traffic management strategies during construction; assisting with the delivery of the New Traffic Control Signal Program; undertaking the functional design of intersection modifications; and assisting with the development and implementation of the Incident Management Program.
Education And Experience
Completion of 3 year community college diploma in civil engineering technology
Minimum of 5 years of related experience in a transportation environment, which includes 2 years of experience using CADD

- CADD systems such as Microstation and AutoCAD
- Micro-computer applications in an engineering environment including utilization of spreadsheets, word processing, intra/internet, and specialized traffic software
- Roadway construction and maintenance methods and practices
- Traffic management equipment and strategies
- Traffic Incident Management issues and technologies
- Intelligent Transportation System Technologies
- The city’s transportation network and the factors which affect the flow of vehicles and other modes of transportation
- Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and City of Ottawa policies and procedures related to occupational health and safety
- Read and interpret contract drawings, plans, specifications, and guidelines to carry out analysis of proposed designs
- Develop designs and detours for roadway projects
- Communicate with various audiences, including with the general public, utilities, contractors, technical and engineering staff, senior management, members of council
- Develop reports and contribute to major presentations, reports and other documentation
- Respond quickly to urgent situations and to demonstrate decisiveness and competency in a professional manner
- Deal with staff, colleagues, councillors, contractors, and the public in a professional manner
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize multiple tasks under tight deadlines
- Self-motivated and ability to work with minimum direction and supervision
- Organized, efficient and productive
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Demonstrate the desire to gain knowledge and learn new skills
- Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated; This position requires the successful candidate to use their own transportation.
- You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
- Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
