With your innovative ideas and expertise in fleet management and experience in managing a large scale maintenance operation, you will have the opportunity to positively impact internal stakeholders by leading the team who support their fleet maintenance requirements which ultimately impacts our customers ability to meet service delivery provided to the citizens of the City of Edmonton.

Reporting to the Director of Municipal Fleet Maintenance, you will balance leading your operational team in successfully executing the strategy, priorities and direction of the section and unit while you implement the human, social, technical and operational systems required to carry out the work of the functional area on a day to day basis.

What will you do?

  • Manage operational and staff resources required to perform preventative and on-demand maintenance on a varied fleet of light and heavy vehicles and equipment
  • Liaise with planning to ensure workloads, resources, training, tooling and customer requirements are optimized to ensure cost effective quality service
  • Lead the safety program within your facility by promoting a safety culture that aligns with OH&S requirements and industry best practices
  • As a City steward, effectively manage the total annual garage operating budget of approximately $10 million, ensuring that the City of Edmonton can demonstrate value for money and achieve client service level requirements
  • Ensure customer experience meets objectives by supporting vehicle maintenance and repair escalations, overall customer interaction, reporting and concerns.
  • Administer overhaul programs, shop safety programs and determining training requirements for staff
  • Maintain communication with the unions and working together to proactively manage labour relation issues
  • Provide oversight over garage performance metrics and develop plans to maintain or improve overall performance
  • Lead the group as a change champion while also Identifying areas for process or productivity improvement
  • Support the development of section strategy and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Ensure service is performed in a safe, environmentally and financially responsible manner, meeting service and client standards


Qualifications:

  • Journeyperson certificate in the trade of Heavy Duty or Automotive Mechanic supplemented by formal training in supervision and management; Other combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • Progressively responsible experience in automotive and/or heavy duty equipment repairs and maintenance of which 5 years should be at a foreperson and/or leadership level with experience in the assessment and application of discipline in union labour matters, within a unionized environment


Assets:

  • Certified Public Fleet Professional and/or Canadian Institute of Management designation is an asset


Skills required for success:

  • Demonstrated technical skills and ability to make judgement in diagnosing repair problems and carrying out repairs in a timely manner
  • Proven skills in the following areas: leadership in change management, strategic thinking, interpersonal and communication (verbal and written), priority setting, planning, conflict resolution, customer relations and negotiating
  • Excellent understanding of performance measurement development and implementation in an operational environment
  • Demonstrated ability to manage resources including staffing levels required to meet operational demands
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing and presenting to diverse audiences

Conditions of employment & work environment:

  • Up to: 1 Permanent Full-time position
  • Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday. This position may be eligible for the Hybrid Work Program.
  • Salary Range: $89,766 - $128,237 (Annually)
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position.
  • Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business.
  • Management and Out-of-Scope positions at the City of Edmonton are being reviewed for possible inclusion in the Civic Service Union 52 bargaining unit. If this position is impacted, the incumbent will be notified accordingly.
