Job Summary

Reporting to the Program Manager, Medicine 2 (4N), the registered nurse is responsible and accountable for the provision of safe, effective, patient focused nursing care to patients and families. In collaboration with the family and other team members, the registered nurse is responsible for ongoing assessment and monitoring of the patient’s health status, identification of patient/family needs and the development of plans to meet those needs, the provision of direct patient care and the evaluation of care. The registered nurse also participates in the ongoing professional development of self and others, and in unit and hospital wide quality improvement initiatives.

The registered nurse is responsible for the application of current theory and research in the delivery of care consistent with the vision and values of the hospital and the standards of relevant professional organizations. The registered nurse complies with the Occupational Health and Safety standards for the hospital and is proactive in promoting a safe work environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 6 months current Telemetry, ICU/CCU, Emergency experience - preferred
  • Ability to perform common/critical care drug calculations and preparations (IV, IM, SC, oral suspension, IV drips)
  • Basic nursing skills: BCLS, venipuncture, insertion and management of nasogastric tubes and foley catheters, nursing care related to chest tubes, nursing care related to central lines, blood product administrations, complex dressings and packing, sterile technique and patient restraints
  • Effective problem solving/critical thinking
  • Thorough knowledge of nursing principles, procedures, and practice in accordance with the Standards of Nursing Practice of the College of Nurses and regulations of the Regulated Health Professions Act
  • Knowledge of central line care, Infusion pumps - required
  • Availability for all shifts - required
  • Ability to communicate in French - asset
  • Good interpersonal skills and effective communication abilities
  • Ability to participate in nursing education programs and research projects
  • General good health and a level of fitness appropriate for the demands of the position
  • Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment

Education

EDUCATION/TRAINING EXPERIENCE:

  • Current Certificate of Registration issued through the College of Nurses of Ontario - required
  • BCLS - required
  • EKG Interpretation Certificate required OR successful completion of arrhythmia Interpretation and Intervention exams – required
