Your Opportunity:

The Stollery PCE NICU at the Royal Alexandra Hospital is a 69 funded bed unit that admits babies from all over Northern Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. The program provides neonatal care in collaboration with other Edmonton Zone NICUs and is characterized by high acuity and high activity. Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) will provide frontline leadership that is key to the day-to-day functioning of the unit as well as promoting staff and family wellness and satisfaction. The AHN will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In this role you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a key leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance as well as identifying staff education needs. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of Alberta Health Services. The AHN coordinates, manages, organizes, and prioritizes day to day patient care activities as well as facilitating the educational development of the care team. Decisions around patient care are made collectively with other team members and in accordance with clinical policies and nursing care standards. The AHN assists with regional and provincial capacity calls as needed and liaises with the Discharge Coordinators for appropriate transfers and complex discharges. The AHN participates in Quality Improvement and risk management through patient advocacy and identifies issues requiring follow-up by Unit Managers, providing supporting documentation as necessary.

Description:

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:

We are recruiting an experienced, highly organized, and dynamic individual to function in this role. At least 5 years level 2 and 3 NICU experience. At least 3 years’ experience functioning as a charge nurse in the NICU. Lead Charge experience preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated advanced skills in assessment, critical thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution, and time management. Demonstrated understanding of the health system and proven ability to provide exceptional patient and family centered care within a continually changing complex healthcare environment. Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, adaptable and flexible and work as part of a team. Must be able to manage stressful situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

BScN preferred. Previous leadership and/or management experience preferred Neonatal Resuscitation and high-risk case room delivery attendance experience preferred Experience with Quality and Process Improvement and change management methodology. Family Centered Care and Family Integrated Care (FiCare) experience an asset.
