This is a designated competition open to African/Black Nova Scotians/Canadians.

The salary scale for Professional Support 3 is based on steps that range from $ 68,917.73 - $91,624.75. New Professional Support may receive up to a maximum of seven steps for relevant occupational experience which is $ 80,254.49 annually.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is an undergraduate degree. A degree focused in Student Affairs, African Canadian or Indigenous Studies, Adult Education, Education, or Social Science majors would be considered an asset.

  • You have a minimum of three years (full time equivalent) of recent and relevant occupational experience in student services or supporting adults in personal, academic, and/or career development and service delivery in African Canadian settings

  • Occupational experience that includes working in higher education and understanding of the student life cycle and barriers to higher education would be considered an asset

  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, E-mail, student databases and digital platforms

  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional student experience

  • You have experience supporting/providing service to students and prospective students

Responsibilities

What you will be doing...

Reporting to the Manager, Student Services You will be helping students make decisions, solve problems, and meet goals that maximize their college experience. You will work to engage and support a caseload of students - including prospective, transitioning-in, current, and transitioning-out students. You will also provide culturally relevant services and supports for African Canadian students and support other Student Services staff in developing awareness and skills in working with students in a culturally inclusive environment. You will be planning and delivering events, activities, and interactions which support student growth, engagement, and leadership. You will be advising students in areas of Accessibility, Career, Enrolment, Finance, Learning, Student Life and Wellness.

Support services at Ivany Campus are year-round with academic scheduled programming from 7:30am - 9:00pm and an average student enrolment of approximately 2800. You will be a primary contact for Black and African Canadian students.

For example, you will:

  • Assist students with program selection and information on the application process
  • Provide opportunities for students to explore career and employment options
  • Help students learn and make informed decisions regarding college policies, program selection and completion options
  • Assist students in planning how to meet financial commitments of college and navigating the bursary and scholarship opportunities
  • Meet with students to respond to questions or to provide supports to students facing challenges and make referrals to relevant community services when appropriate Use recreational, cultural, and social events and activities to engage students
  • Refer students to internal learning disability and counselling supports
  • Refer students to relevant community services and supports

You will be a member of campus and provincial Student Services and Advising teams, and a member of the Cultural Supports team within Student Services, and the Employee Network. These teams provide a continuum of integrated services and opportunities to students in-person, online and in blended environments. You will initiate and build partnerships with Academic Chairs and Faculty in order to provide services tailored to the unique needs and opportunities of students and programs.

As a condition of employment, Professional Support employees at NSCC must complete a part-time adult education program delivered by NSCC. This adult education program is a significant investment on the part of NSCC in the learning and development of new employees. To achieve regular status; all probationary, full or part-time Professional Support employees of the College must successfully complete the program within their probationary period. Term full-time Professional Support employees whose term appointment is twelve or more months are also required to participate in this program.
