Summary Of Duties

Reporting to the Business Relationship Manager (BRM), the Business Architect; collaborates with the BRM and business partners to identify, analyze, and validate business needs and strategies, through strategic technology enablement and investment. The Business Architect acts as an internal consultant, advocate, mentor and change agent for both IT and the business. The Business Architect communicates best practices, standards, and policies to the business partners. The Business Architect has expert knowledge of the business domain, including mid to long term business strategy and drivers, contributes to creating business capability roadmaps and remains aware of the various business scenarios and motivations.

The Business Architect helps to ensure alignment between IT and strategic business goals, facilitating key business and technology decisions to achieve strategic business outcomes. The Business Architect works with the Enterprise Architect and the Enterprise Architecture Board to ensure collection of business requests and outcomes. These requests are to be documented and presented within the IT intake process. The Business Architect acts as a stakeholder in solution development, systems integration, reengineering and/or change management activities that impact the business partner.

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Cultivates, manages and maintains strong relationships with business partners, demonstrating knowledge and understanding of their processes, priorities, and strategic direction.
  • Identifies opportunities to apply IT services and technologies that will deliver business value and enhance service delivery.
  • Establishes and maintains ad-hoc and regularly scheduled written and in-person influential communications with leadership, stakeholders, and end users of the business partner.
  • Applies a structured business architecture approach and methodology for capturing the needs of the business and IT in the context of the enterprise.
  • Documents, analyses, catalogues, and recommends improvements to the enterprise and/or business partner, as needed to support strategic and operational goals.
  • Collects and analyses business needs through the delivery of business capability maps, stakeholder mapping, process maps, fit-gap analyses, value stream maps, user experience testing or other such tools to optimize technology implementation.
  • The Business Architect works with the project team to validate that proposed solution delivers the expected outcomes of the business and acts as a voice for the business.
  • Develops recommendations for consolidation and continuous improvement opportunities through market/industry research, application of design thinking, environmental scans and other innovative methodologies.
  • Identifies opportunities where technologies, systems and processes can improve business operations to help achieve organizational goals.
  • Assists in developing section goals, work plans and objectives by participating in strategic planning sessions.
  • Acts on behalf of Business Relationship Manager in their absence as required.
  • Guides business leaders through the development of a business capabilities model for the enterprise (and/or assigned business unit). Evaluates and presents information that will facilitate effective and timely decision-making through written and oral communication materials that effectively summarize findings with recommendations.
  • Supports/develops business case justifications and cost/benefit analyses for business application spending and initiatives related to packaged software purchase/upgrade and custom developed solutions.
  • Supports procurement and vendor management by collaborating on the preparation of RFPs, bid proposals, contracts, scope of work reports, and other documentation for projects and associated efforts with other team member and Managers.
  • Develops value realization measures for solution engagement post implementation.
  • Works in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned which are directly related to the responsibilities of the position.

Qualifications

  • University Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or an equivalent combination of education and relevant business experience.
  • Five plus years of experience in architecture, technology service delivery, business process analysis, business relationship management and/or related disciplines preferred.
  • Business Relationship Management, Business Analysis, Enterprise Architecture, Lean or Six Sigma certifications are an asset.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge and understanding of current and emerging architecture and/or business relationship management, standards and practices.
  • Ability to correlate disconnected documentation to articulate collective relevance to the organization and to high-priority business issues.
  • Proficiency in modeling business processes using a variety of tools and techniques, with the ability to create flexible model-based representations that can be adjusted as needed to collect, aggregate, or disaggregate complex and conflicting business information.
  • Extensive experience planning and deploying both business and IT initiatives.
  • Experience using design thinking methodology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of application development lifecycles and supporting practices.
  • Experience with multi-platform environments and infrastructure architectures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of project management principles. Ability to lead teams to deliver quality projects on time and on schedule.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Exposure to business theory, business processes, management, budgeting, and business office operations.
