The Peel District School Board (PDSB) is a racially, culturally and linguistically diverse board that serves 155,000+ students and approximately 17,000 employees. Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Accounting, the successful candidate will be responsible for the preparation and analysis of monthly and annual Expenditure Statements in accordance with Public Sector Accounting Board Standards and guidelines for senior management and quarterly financial reports to the Board.


Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation, analysis and reconciliation of monthly and annual reports on various Board Operating Expenses including all four Ministry reporting cycles, Estimates, Revised Estimates, Consolidation Reporting and Year end reporting and various other Accounting and reconciling activities
  • Prepare and complete quarterly Expenditure Statements to be presented to the Board of Trustees for approval
  • Collect, compile, gather information and data that will assist in completing analysis and note explanations as required in the statements
  • Complete and update supporting schedules on a monthly basis
  • Present Expenditure Statements at the monthly Finance meeting of Finance staff including Supervisors and Managers
  • Forecasting of financial results based on actual expenditure incurred and prior year experience
  • Distribute monthly Expenditure Statement summaries to Controllers/ Directors/ Superintendents for review and approval
  • Monitor department surplus/ deficit reporting by program based on enrolment, grants received and expenditures work with departments to adhere to Ministry reporting guidelines and to produce reports so they better understand and track with budgets
  • Understanding the assigned grants, verify its calculation, determine the impact of legislation change and compare it to the previous cycle
  • Ensure all schedules and reports for financial reporting are Public Sector Accounting Board compliant
  • Assist with year-end audit preparation and schedules for all Operating Expenditures, analyze and
  • Provide explanations for vacancies over thresholds
  • Analyze Trustee expenses on a monthly basis and prepare a summary report for year-end Reporting
  • Review journal entries, to ascertain properly balanced, appropriate backup is included and proper and accurate coding and approval on a weekly basis
  • Complete and update Transportation Report on a monthly basis
  • Ensure transportation analysis is completed in an accurate and timely manner liaising as needed with the STOPR Transportation Consortium
  • Completion of monthly benefits analysis and complete the benefits entry on a monthly basis
  • Ensure that suspense accounts are analyzed and cleared on a monthly basis
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • Degree in Business, Commerce, Finance, Accounting or related field is required.
  • Professional Accounting designation ( CPA) is required.
  • Three to five years of accounting experience, preferably in the public sector.
  • Knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Board ( PSAB) accounting standards, Canadian Generally
  • Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Canadian Auditing Standards.
  • Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail and accuracy of results and reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal are required.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize and meet timelines.
  • Thorough understanding and skills in use of financial information systems and other applications ( Excel,
  • Word, PowerPoint, Access, report writing, etc.). FIS, VISTA and PAM an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse school community and/ or work environment.
  • Record of satisfactory on- the-job performance while employed by the Peel District School Board.
