The Planning and Development Department is looking for a temporary full-time Engineering Inspector to join their team for approximately two (2) years. The successful incumbent will be responsible for technical, regulatory, and inspection work providing quality control inspections of various public works construction and utility installation projects affecting City property.

Responsibilities

The successful incumbent will conduct field and quality control inspections outside in all weather conditions; ensure work by private contractors and public works crews is performed in accordance with contractual terms and established regulations including workmanship, conformance to and enforcement of permits, contracts, specifications and related requirements; provide technical advice directly to developers, landscape architects, engineers, and contractors related to construction management on City property; arbitrate minor disputes regarding contract interpretations, construction practices, standards and methods; attend pre-construction meetings and monitor construction progress; maintain accurate records, prepare progress reports and assists in design preparation and cost estimates; consult and liaise with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and handle complaints received from the public stemming from construction projects. Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

A thorough knowledge of MMCD Construction Standards and Specifications together with considerable experience and knowledge of the methods, practices, equipment and materials used in the construction and installation of municipal services and departmental regulations, procedures and municipal bylaws is required.

Graduation from a certificate program at a recognized institute of technology in Civil Engineering plus sound related technical and inspection work, preferably with Certification as a Public Works Inspector III (Applied Science Technicians and Technologists of B.C.) or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required. Certification as a Certified Technician with ASTTBC and a Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is also required along with proficiency in Microsoft Office, GIS systems and use of mobile computers (iPad). The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships is critical to the success of the role.

You will be required to provide your own transportation in return for reimbursement according to the Vehicle Policy.

Compensation

$42.45 to $50.13 per hour (January 2024 rates)

Pay Grade 24 (Provisional)

Hours of Work

The City of North Vancouver currently works on a compressed work schedule of 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, with one scheduled day off (Monday or Friday) approximately every 3-week scheduling cycle.

Additional Information

For temporary full-time positions of 8 months or longer, a City employee who is successful on the posting will have the right to revert to their former position.
