Communications and Public Engagement (CPE) is the Government of Alberta’s full-service communications, public relations and marketing agency.CPE provides planning, execution and measurement of communications efforts. Its expert staff provide specialized services across the spectrum of communications and marketing from research, design, writing and social media, to event coordination, issues management, digital communications, advertising and public engagement.The agency staffs the external communications functions in all departments of government and its operations branch, with a mandate of enhancing communications between the people and the Government of Alberta.

Role Responsibilities

As the Assistant Director of Public Engagement, reporting to the Director of Public Engagement and Research, you’ll play a key role in providing timely, strategic advice while leading a team of engagement experts. Your work will support ministries across the government in developing effective consultation and engagement strategies with stakeholders and Albertans.

You will bring knowledge and expertise to build capacity and share best practices with staff across all levels and departments. You will provide strategic advice and support to the Director and to ministries to help them conduct effective and efficient public engagement including methodology, tools selection and approval process.

Your Duties Will Include

  • Supports development of whole-of-government public engagement capacity
  • Day to day management of three staff accountable for public engagement advice Using critical thinking skills and political acumen to enable an understanding of government priorities and the impact they have on engagement activity
  • Providing advice and leadership to help ensure Alberta government public engagement is coordinated, accessible and effective
  • Contributing to the development of systems and processes to ensure public engagement activities are appropriate to the scope of the work, goals and audiences
  • Designing and delivering internal training sessions and sharing best engagement practices.
  • Leads procurement of public engagement vendors and tools
  • Leads and maintains best practices and continuous improvement
  • Works collaboratively with Communications and Public Engagement colleagues

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field, such as business, communications, or social sciences, supplemented by four years progressively responsible management experience.

Equivalencies To Be Considered As Below

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; OR 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Assets

  • Master’s degree in business, communications, or social science
  • International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) experience
  • Excellent political acumen
  • Experience with systems work including building processes and tools for use in large organizations
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in public engagement, including survey design and techniques
  • Familiarity with trends, issues, and best practices in public engagement
  • Familiarity with public engagement and consultation contractors, and the procurement process
  • Management experience in coaching, training, leading, and motivating teams

Notes

Hours of Work: 36.25 per week.

The successful candidates will be evaluated on a combination of experience and education.

The successful candidate may be required to support in-person engagement events as needed on evenings and weekends. This may include workshops, townhalls or other events if support is required.
