About Our Opportunity

As the Manager of the Climate Plan and Strategic Action team, you will take meaningful action on climate change which will involve collaborating and building partnerships, in order to coordinate and advance initiatives across government departments. You will work to enable your team to develop and grow relationships with many diverse communities and stakeholders while also collaborating at the provincial, national, and international level and focusing on shared objectives while representing the province.

Primary Accountabilities

In this role, you will create an environment that promotes continuous learning and improvement by seeking feedback from your team and colleagues and being open to critiques that improve outcomes. Within this ever-evolving field, you will lead through change and be willing to adjust quickly, as needed. This work requires innovative approaches to capacity building, education and information management to ensure that engagement is inclusive and the information trusted.

This position will be responsible for the implementation of the province’s climate action plan including management of the annual climate plan budget. You will be responsible for leading your team in the implementation of the plan and will evaluate and report annually on key climate change mitigation and adaptation progress indicators and outcomes.

You will work creatively with partners to effectively monitor and respond to climate change mitigation, adaptation, and clean economy trends and work to ensure that the climate plan continues to meet the needs of Nova Scotians. The plan will be reviewed regularly and renewed within 5 years of the 2022 release.

You and your team will also be responsible for coordinating climate action across government departments and implementing and reporting on the climate change goals that are outlined in the Environmental Goals and Climate Change Reduction Act and mandate letter commitments. Your team is also responsible for delivering on commitments to help Nova Scotians access funding and improve collaboration, coordination, and capacity through partnerships with Indigenous and African Nova Scotian communities.

As Manager you also work with the management team of the Climate Change Division along with leadership throughout government to achieve the objectives of department. This includes budget and human resource management, priority setting and working across divisions. In addition to the above, you will provide timely strategic analysis and advice to the Executive Director to ensure they are making well-informed decisions on climate change mitigation and adaptation policy and programs.

Qualifications And Experience

You hold a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as Environmental Sciences, Economics, or Business, along with several years of experience in environmental or climate policy. You have a proven track record of leading multidisciplinary teams to address complex, cross-cutting issues, demonstrating strong leadership and fostering trust and collaboration across diverse groups and communities. Your commitment to diversity and advancing anti-racism in the workplace is evident in your leadership approach.

Demonstrated Knowledge And Experience In The Field Of Climate Change Mitigation And Adaptation Policy And Program Development Is Mandatory. This Includes

  • A deep understanding of the key policies and programs necessary to achieve net zero emissions in Nova Scotia;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of climate and sustainability priorities in Nova Scotia, and the ability to navigate the intersections of climate policies with other critical areas, such as housing, transportation, affordability, energy, equity, economic growth, and trade;
  • Extensive experience in public engagement and building strategic partnerships.

As the ideal candidate, you are well-versed in provincial, national, and international climate change mitigation and adaptation policies, programs, and plans, with a keen understanding of how these initiatives impact communities, businesses, and the broader population of Nova Scotia. Your experience includes negotiating agreements and strategies with both government and non-government partners.

Your ability to apply theory and best practices to develop creative, practical, and defensible solutions is a key asset, as is your skill in identifying and articulating appropriate approaches to policy issues. You bring experience in research, planning, project management, critical thinking, and data analysis. Additionally, your willingness to share data, ideas, and experiences with colleagues to support policy development or partnership building is a strong asset. Existing relationships with stakeholders in climate change mitigation and adaptation is a desirable asset as it further enhances your ability to make a meaningful impact.

Excellent verbal and written communication and persuasion skills are required.

Pay Grade: EC 12

Salary Range: $3,687.15 - $4,608.93 Bi-Weekly
