Your Opportunity:

We are currently looking for a Full Time Neurosurgery Clinical Assistant (CA) to join our team at the Hydrocephalus Clinic, Foothills Medical Centre located in Calgary, Alberta. CA's are important members of the collaborative care team at Alberta Health Services (AHS) in Clinical Neurosciences, functioning as mid-level providers under the supervision and direction of physician supervisor(s) to provide acute care coverage within our hospitals, making a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. CA's are registered for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry and provide clinical support under the direction of AHS Medical Staff. These outpatient clinics and units provide care to patients who are suffering from neurosurgical disorders through a collaborative multidisciplinary team. All disciplines work together to provide holistic patient and family care. The CA will work as a part of a multidisciplinary team in close collaboration with neurosurgeons and neurologists and the supporting administrative and research personnel. The CA is expected to participate and take a leadership role in quality improvement (QI) initiatives. Opportunity exists to identify and participate in research areas in the inpatient setting and promote the application of research and evidence in clinical practice. Once the probationary period is complete, the CA is anticipated to evaluate 5-10 patients per day under the supervision of a staff Neurosurgeon. Description:

As a CA, you will perform advanced, focused, and/or comprehensive health assessments and interventions. By integrating patient information and evidence-based practice, you will order, interpret, and perform diagnostic tests to formulate differential diagnoses and management plans. The CA plays a crucial role in coordinating complex neurosurgical care in the outpatient setting, with key considerations to the patient's journey through other areas of care. The CA is responsible for the continuous care of the patient and their family by conducting clinic assessments, investigating, managing, and medical documentation of assigned patients. The CA will communicate assessment findings and/or diagnoses, including outcomes and prognoses, to patients/families in collaboration with the attending MD and residents and utilize complex reasoning reflective of expertise and education to safely coordinate and manage care for patients while promoting continuity across the continuum of care. The CA is expected to contribute to and create opportunities for team members to optimize knowledge, clinical skills, and client care. This includes identifying gaps to improve processes and practices and providing evidence-informed recommendations for change. The responsibilities of the CA include but are not limited to reviewing and triaging referrals, taking detailed history from the patient, performing a physical and neurological examination, reviewing medical records and summarizing relevant information and making a diagnosis, ordering diagnostic tests, arranging for consultations and following up on results, arranging appropriate follow-up investigations and clinic visits, approach patients regarding research studies and participate in clinical and QI initiatives.
