This role's central focus is to empower our client business areas by overseeing and nurturing our environmental management system, Enviso, aligned with ISO 14001 standards. Through this system, we actively champion environmental protection and stewardship, ensure regulatory compliance, and pursue enhancements to prevent and control our environmental impact. As part of a dedicated team, you'll report directly to an Environmental Manager and collaboratively engage with technical, environmental, and engineering experts to drive us closer to our environmental goals and aspirations.

What will you do?

  • Plan, support and coordinate environmental activities within the business area(s) to help meet climate resilience targets set out in the city of Edmonton’s Climate Resilience Policy C627 and the Community Energy Transition Strategy and the City’s Environmental Policy C512
  • Coordinate, direct, and participate in internal and external environmental audits to assess conformity to Environmental Management Procedures, the ISO 14001 standard, and compliance with applicable environmental legislation
  • Apply the relevant environmental legislation and associated obligations to ensure the organization maintains compliance with the ISO 14001 standard and retains certification
  • Provide inspection and root cause investigation services that identify and mitigate systemic non-conformities and assign corrective actions
  • Assist with the maintenance of documentation, registries, and records to support the Environmental Management System, including: environmental aspects and impacts registry, compliance obligations registry, corporate environmental programs, key performance indicators, operational procedures, and work instructions
  • Provide expert environmental advice to internal stakeholders in setting environmental objectives, targets, and improvement initiatives
  • Prepare, present and communicate technical reports for regulatory purposes
  • Understand the activities, products and services of the assigned business area(s) and the associated environmental risks and opportunities
  • Support the improvement and/or development of controls and corrective actions for non-conformities and help evaluate the effectiveness of the corrective actions
  • Support, plan and coordinate environmental projects, reviews and studies. This could include procurement of consulting services, managing contracts, supervising the scope and quality of environmental work, and technical review


Qualifications:

  • University Degree in Sciences (Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience) or Engineering (environmental); or completion of a recognized two-year diploma program in Sciences or Technology with specialization in Environmental Sciences
  • A minimum of 6+ years experience (8 years for applicants with a Diploma) in a combination of the following areas:
    • Environmental and/or risk management
    • Energy management
    • Ambient air quality management
    • Water quality management
    • Integrated pest management
    • Environmental assessment and permitting
    • Natural capital and nature-based solutions
    • Contaminated site/brownfield management (including expertise in legislation, remediation and management strategies)
    • ISO management systems
    • Working in cross-functional teams in large, complex organizations
  • ISO 14001 Lead Auditor certification is a requirement and must be obtained within the first year of employment

Assets :

  • Registration as a professional in an environmental discipline


Skills required for success:

  • Extensive knowledge of environmental management systems, applicable laws, bylaws and regulations and legislative requirements
  • Experience with environmental improvement strategies and industry best practices
  • Competency in analytical and critical thinking, with knowledge of incident investigation, and risk assessment and management Demonstrated relationship-building and conflict-management skills
  • Effective written communication capable of developing a wide range of written documents, from technical to general
  • Proven ability to represent the City of Edmonton professionally, honestly, respectfully, and in a safe manner
  • Effective planning and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate and facilitate meetings and activities with both internal teams and external agencies
  • Demonstrated ability to work outdoors for extended periods in unfavorable weather conditions
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment where work responsibilities depend on team cooperation/collaboration
  • Research and problem-solving skills to gather required information, make decisions and develop recommendations
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and Microsoft Office

Conditions of employment:

  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent); candidates must arrange their own vehicle and business auto insurance to be reimbursed for mileage according to City of Edmonton policy

Up to 1 temporary full-time position for up to 18 months in accordance with Article 18.02 of the Collective Agreement

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary: $51.174 - $65.301 (Hourly)
