The Big Picture

Reporting to the Senior Financial Analyst, the Financial Analyst will be an integral part of the growing Finance team and will be responsible for ensuring timely, accurate and comprehensive financial and investment performance reporting.

This role is a 14-month maternity leave contract position that offers a great opportunity to be involved with and support all aspects of a growing business, with a tangible impact on accounting operations, financial reporting, and process improvements.


Impact Through Innovation

The person in this role will work closely with the Senior Finance Analyst and other team members and will have primary responsibilities pertaining to the not-for-profit foundations and certain secondary responsibilities relating to the family office holding companies. Specifically, the responsibilities will include:

Primary

  • Maintaining up to date accounting records for the foundations created by the family office based on ASNPO standards including:
  • Updating the accounting system with the monthly investment portfolio transactions and reconciling the accounting and investment reporting system
  • Recording expenses and intercompany transactions, including monthly intercompany reconciliations with family office and operating companies
  • Posting bank transactions and performing bank reconciliations
  • Recording of contributions to the foundations and donation activities
  • Processing credit card claims
  • Drafting financial statements
  • Creating cash flow forecasts
  • Reviewing transaction reports and other statements received from custodians, banks, fund administrators and fund managers to ensure that the transactions are accurately captured, classified and reconciled
  • Maintaining the investment reporting system, including following workflows for updating prices / valuations, creating new accounts, assets and maintenance of various related data elements.
  • Validating vendor information and setting up payments and transfers for the foundations
  • Providing HST and other requisite data to the tax team to support tax filings for the foundations
  • Assistance in preparing and providing information to the auditors
  • Assisting with setting up and maintaining bank and investment accounts of the foundations, as well as other treasury activities
  • Gather financial and non-financial KPI data from other charitable organizations to which the foundations may be considering donating, to aid decision-making.

Secondary

  • Assistance with handling correspondence and paperwork to execute on new investments for the family office entities, including account openings, subscription documents and other KYC information submissions.
  • Carrying out certain analyses, as assigned.
  • Performing secondary checks on the investment data in the investment reporting system and maintaining schedules to support the same.
  • Acting as a backup for team members working on the holding companies for the AP process
  • Working with the team to identify process efficiencies and implementing new processes.
  • Assistance and hands-on involvement in various projects, as may be required.


Your Unique Expertise


Required skills:

  • Utmost integrity and discretion
  • University degree in Accounting & Finance
  • 2+ years of work experience as a financial analyst
  • Strong MS Excel skills
  • Strong analytical skills, accuracy and attention to detail
  • Proven ability to think strategically and to improve processes and strategies
  • Self-starter mindset, who is able to work both independently and as part of a small team


Asset skills:

  • Interest in investment accounting, risk and performance measurement for investment portfolios
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships internally across the organization
  • Experience bookkeeping for multiple entities in a multi-currency environment
  • Experience in finance for not-for-profits
  • Experience with Sage Intacct and/or Addepar

Our Impact


KF Matheson is one of the largest Family Offices in Canada representing the proceeds of the Baylis Medical divestiture to Boston Scientific. KF Matheson manages and invests the accumulated families’ wealth and Foundations’ assets, excluding any majority-owned operating entities. The investment mandate is largely focused on: passively managed direct assets, direct real estate holdings, and selection/oversight of 3rd managers. A small portion of the portfolio will be in early stage / venture / growth investments in adjacent fields to the principals primary business, which will either be direct investments or co-investments.
