As the Planning Engineer, you will plan, design, and implement infrastructure for the potable water line of service. You will also carry out long and short-term strategic planning in the Water Utility to achieve long-term health and sustainability of the water infrastructure of the City of Calgary. Primary duties include:
- Plan, design, manage and deliver projects (in house and by hiring a consultant) to support the planning and analysis functions of the Water Utility considering risk, levels of service, and strategic plans.
- Monitor trends, analyze data and develop solutions for potable water servicing using available tools such as hydraulic models and GIS-based asset information systems.
- Develop and use hydraulic modeling tools to support collaborators through distribution water quality modeling and shutdown analysis.
- Research and monitor emerging industry trends to identify new or alternative approaches or solutions.
- Analyze data, prepare reports, and make conclusions within the scope of assignments provided by other team members, senior technical advisors, and leadership.
- Build and foster networks and relationships with internal technical experts, operations staff, and other business units to strengthen the working group's relationship with key collaborators across Water Utility.
Qualifications
- A degree in Civil, Environmental or Water Resources Engineering or a related Engineering field, and at least 4 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. - Experience must include planning and designing water systems, data analytics, asset and risk management, and project management.
- Working knowledge of potable water linear systems design, operations and maintenance, water quality, and strong analytical skills are essential.
- Experience in hydraulic computer modelling and knowledge of a variety of computer applications, including InfoWater(Pro) and Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS), would be assets.
- A strong background in water utilities and demonstrated knowledge and experience with municipal, provincial, and federal legislations related to the water utility would be assets.
- Success in this position requires strong abilities in technical analysis, modelling, strategic and critical thinking, problem-solving and planning skills with attention to detail and accuracy, risk assessment, independent decision making, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, change management, customer focus and relationship building.
Working Conditions: Office environment with occasional site visits/field work may involve outdoor or hazardous conditions.
