Course number and title: LHA5819H: Special Topics in Higher Education: Master's Level East Asian Higher Education

Course description:

This course examines traditions of scholarship and scholarly institutions in East Asia, relating them to such major religious and philosophical perspectives as Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and Shintoism. Modern universities and higher education systems in China and Japan are analysed comparatively, as they drew upon Western models of the university, yet also incorporated aspects of their own traditions. Comparison with the higher education of other East Asian societies will be encouraged. The course will enable students to grasp the main lines of difference between higher education in East Asia and the West, as well as differentiate some of the threads that have contributed to diversity within the region.

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2025 to April 30, 2025

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,182.42
Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $9,641.55
Sessional Lecturer II: $9,826.96
Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,025.84
Sessional Lecturer III: $10,060.93
Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $10,262.15

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

Candidates must hold a doctorate in Higher Education or a related field; have a demonstrated record of scholarship in the field of Higher Education and the subject area of the course; have practical experience related to the topic of the course; and have successful graduate teaching experience in the subject area of the course and a successful track record of teaching online, preferably using Canvas/Quercus.

Prepare, organize, and lead this graduate half course; be available to students seeking assistance between classes; and evaluate student work and provide students with feedback.
