Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Investigator Team Lead, you will undertake investigations and compliance audits pursuant to the Peace Officer Act (POA), Security Services and Investigators Act (SSIA), Civil Enforcement Act, and Body Armour Control Act. You will work with stakeholders to provide oversight, direction, and advice to ensure that effective government oversight of these programs are exercised.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include

  • Conducting professional standards and criminal background checks on applicants, investigations and appeal investigations in relation to public complaints and employer-identified code of conduct and policy violations.
  • Conducting compliance audits on licensed private investigator and security guard agencies (SSIA) and peace officer agencies (POA), as well as site visits throughout Alberta to ensure standards are upheld.
  • Advising and supporting peace officer and security agencies as well as other stakeholders operating under the legislation.
  • Auditing licensed businesses to ensure compliance with the SSIA and supporting peace officer regulations.
  • Review of public complaints from licensed businesses or authorized employers under the code of conduct.

As this role works closely with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, you must have the ability to establish, foster, and maintain professional working relationships. You possess strong time management and organizational skills to meet required timelines. You demonstrate strong critical thinking and decision-making abilities to support administrative fairness and compliance within peace officer and security industry frameworks. Additionally, you are able to adapt both your verbal and written communication to fit the needs of your audience.

Qualifications

A university degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Law Enforcement, or related field plus two (2) years of progressively responsible related experience. A minimum of least two (2) years of conducting investigations (such as, but not limited to criminal and/or regulatory) is also required.

Equivalency

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

A peace officer appointment is required for this role.

Preference Will Be Given To Those With The Following

  • Experience in law enforcement or regulatory compliance in a related field
  • Experience conducting interviews with witnesses
  • Experience composing analytical legal correspondence and/or reports
  • Experience interpreting legislation, policy and/or procedures
  • Experience conducting audits for compliance
  • Working knowledge of the Criminal Code, Peace Officer Act, Body Armour Control Act, Security Services and Investigators Act, Civil Enforcement Act and the 2021 Automated Traffic Enforcement Technology Guideline.

Notes

This position will entail some travel to various locations within Alberta, as it is a requirement of some job responsibilities.

Please be advised that final candidates for this position will be asked to undergo a criminal records security screening and must also have and maintain a valid Class 5 Drivers License.
