Due to continuing growth in our Rail/Transit practice, our EDO (Engineering Design Organization) is looking for a dynamic and motivated individual to take on the role of Intermediate Design Manager – Rail and Transit based out of any of our offices in the GTA (Toronto, Mississauga, Waterloo, Markham or Whitby).

Main responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leading multi-disciplinary project delivery for complex station DB/P3 projects to produce a compliant, constructible designs in accordance with Client requirements, Operation and Maintenance requirements and Construction requirements
  • Ensure the design produced follows appropriate engineering processes, including GHD and Project specific processes
  • Coordinating Quality Control of all deliverable submittals in accordance with GHD’s Quality Management System
  • Accountable for developing or verifying the technical scope of a project and working with subject areas to provide pricing during proposal, and subsequently work planning following project award to initiate design activities
  • Participate actively in the preparation and alignment to a schedule of deliverables in collaboration with the Project Controls team
  • Responsible for managing the engineering design budget and providing key inputs to the Project Controls team
  • Responsible for implementing and following the project’s Change Control system, including proactive escalation of potential changes
  • Participate to continuously review and improve the overall project strategy to meet design schedule and budget with the ability to support staging and phasing requirements.
  • Ensure fluid communication between the project management team, the design team, construction team and the various internal and external partners
  • Verifies that the schedule and budget data match the progress of the professional services throughout execution of the project.
  • Coordinates the preparation of the design criteria by the team leads
  • Lead the creation and execution of design work plan and level of effort (LOE).
  • Convenes, chairs and documents interdisciplinary design coordination meetings and brings forward updates and any critical issues that impact external partners to the Project Manager.
  • May serve as liaison between the construction contract administrator and engineering team during construction. Coordinates multidisciplinary problem resolution resulting from non-compliance with drawings and specifications at the site.
  • Coordinating design compliance through verification and validation of performance specifications.
  • Identifying value added design changes to positively support design-build projects across all subject areas.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s (B.Sc.) degree or equivalent from a recognized college or university in Civil, Structural, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Member of the PEO or OAA in Province of Ontario
  • Design Management experience on LRT projects within Canada
  • Project Delivery in an alternate project delivery (P3, DB), and experience in leading design team arrangements with contractors and consultants
  • 7+ years of design management experience on large multi-discipline engineering teams (500 mil +) with experience in complex station design and transit facilities.
  • Understanding of depots (bus and rail), stations (at grade, elevated and underground), electrification, and signaling
  • Knowledge of scheduling software and engineering and capital cost estimating techniques is a definite asset.
  • Experience with Building Information Modelling (BIM) on multi-discipline projects
  • The ability to deal with uncertainty, changing and multiple priorities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with reviewing, understanding and challenging Performance Specific Out Specifications.
  • Strong organizational skills
