Reporting to the Food Division Manager, responsibilities for the position include the following:
1. Strategic Planning and Execution: Understands the organization’s strategic plan, provides input into the division’s plan, ensures alignment of individual goals to the division plan, monitors and reports on progress of the division plan, explains the alignment between the division and organizational plans, and speaks to individual goal alignment.
2. Operational Management: Provides functional leadership, guidance, direction and oversight to retail locations and/or reporting positions to ensure all retail operations are carried out in an appropriate, cost-effective manner while minimizing controllable costs and maximizing profitability. Monitors and improves operational management systems, processes and best practises, ensuring up to date documentation of same. Establishes proper alignment in program implementation, image and merchandising standards and brand. Collaborates with the Senior Pharmacy Manager to determine proper product selection (product lines of HBC & OTC products). Oversees appropriate preventative maintenance and tracking. Ensures all health and safety programs and processes are followed consistently across all locations. Ensures all policies are understood and adhered to. Educates and mentors on the customer experience strategy, influencing decisions and actions to meet or exceed the needs of our customers, monitors the customer experience in reporting locations.
3. Marketing: Provides input into strategic plans for the Food Division, including identification of trends, providing market analysis. Understands and analyze both the urban and rural competitive landscape, familiar with market trends and competitor analysis. Supports cross promotions and organization-wide campaigns. Oversees the division’s contribution and execution of the division-wide marketing plan and calendar, in coordination with Marketing & Communication (based on division goals and market analysis); this includes sponsorships, promotional campaigns – Saskatoon Co-op (local), CRS (central), radio, etc. Also ensures the training and education of team members for successful execution of the campaign/marketing initiative. Evaluates and measures marketing campaign success. Ensures the brand differentiators are understood and actioned in the locations’ measure, evaluate and report on outcomes. Monitors competitor pricing and provides recommendations for pricing strategies for the Food & Pharmacy division and ensures implementation at store level.
4. Talent Management & Team Leadership: Communicates and shares relevant information required for alignment and contribution to the employee experience. To ensure all team leaders and team members are fully trained and fully using the online programs. Practices full-cycle talent management practices including talent acquisition, onboarding, performance management, including goal-setting, setting clear performance expectations, coaching and mentoring, development planning, succession planning and employee engagement. Drives engagement and promotes a positive employee experience in the workplace.
5. Financial Management: Works with stakeholders to develop the divisional budgets and forecasts. Supports direct reports to maintain and manage financial targets such as margins and expense, to minimize costs and maximize operational efficiencies and profitability, by identifying opportunities and tactics. Supports Food Division Manager and Location Managers in review of financial budgets and reports; participates in statement reviews. Ensures variance reporting and corrective actions are implemented within allocated timeframes; reconciliation and comprehensive information compiled for the division. Provides input to the Food Division Manager on identifying potential expenditures and assists on developing the financial/capital plan. Responsible for maximizing margin under the centralized pricing program, which will include determining/monitoring competitive prices for Food and ensuring market gains are taken where possible.
6. Safety and Environmental Stewardship: Ensures location practices are in compliance with regulations, and monitoring practices are identified and tracked. Educates direct reports on same and builds culture of safety through implementation of Saskatoon Co-op’s programs and through day-to-day actions. Ensures proper training and certification to operate equipment/machinery and follow Food SOPs on location is current. Ensuring relationships with appropriate external environmental stewards to ensure proper reconciliation procedures are in place and being adhered to including ongoing reporting requirements.
7. Relationship Management: Provides guidance and direction to Team Leaders in regards to location responsibilities. Manages relationships/agreements with external partners and vendors in collaboration with the Food & Pharmacy Division Manager and Location Managers (Food). Collaborates with internal stakeholders to inform, share and support organizational initiatives, and utilize services.
8. Analytics: Compiles data (sale, customer behaviors, etc.), evaluates programs and initiatives using both lagging and leading indicators to inform adjustments, decisions and revisions to programs and campaigns. Utilizes BI tool to measure outcomes, gathers data and compares to targets, investigates reasons for gaps. Identifies and recommends to Food & Pharmacy Division Manager adjustments to targets or actions in order to achieve intended goals. Keeps abreast of market, industry trends, indicators and metrics, and competitor performance. Understands and analyzes both the urban and rural competitive landscape.
Qualifications:
- Candidates will have at a minimum their Grade 12 Diploma or Equivalent. University Degree or Post-Secondary education is considered an asset.
- 8+ Years’ experience in the Food industry or retail environment
- Ability to control operational costs, maximize operational efficiency and improve sales and growth margin.
