The Health & Wellness Centre at the University of Toronto Scarborough provides health promotion, primary care and counselling services in an interprofessional shared care model. The team delivers student-focused care and support that is compassionate, culturally responsive and evidence-based and supports students in achieving their goals and potential by inspiring hope, promoting healthy choices and supporting the healing process. The Counsellor/Therapist is a member of Health & Wellness Centre’s Counselling Services team and is embedded within Student Housing & Residence Life. Working under the direction of the Team Lead, Counselling Services and leadership of the Directors the incumbent provides personal counselling using solution/goal focused psychotherapy to students living in residence at the University of Toronto Scarborough. The Counsellor/Therapist is responsible for providing one-at-a-time/single session therapy, brief counselling to individuals, and running psycho-educational workshops and therapy groups.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assessing the mental health of clients
- Liaising with the health care team to facilitate appropriate internal resources referrals for students in crisis
- Developing components of treatment plans based on appropriate therapeutic approaches
- Providing clinical counselling and psychotherapy to individual students and/or groups of students and making referrals to appropriate resources
- Facilitating psychoeducational workshops that promote the development of coping strategies and skills
- Fostering positive relationships with campus resources and community health services providers
- Following rules and procedural processes related to Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
- Exercising extreme care to prevent serious physical or emotional injury or harm
Essential Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in counselling psychology or social work or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. Must be in good standing with applicable professional college.
- Minimum five years of post-graduate experience in a community mental health setting and/or outpatient mental health unit performing brief or short-term counselling to individuals and groups.
- Extensive experience with mental health and illness, behavioral issues, anger management, and conflict resolution.
- Experience working with post-secondary students and knowledge of community mental health resources.
- Extensive experience providing clinical counselling to emerging adults.
- Experience with addiction assessment and treatment in individual and group settings.
- Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and senior administrators about issues facing students in crisis and make recommendations.
- Knowledge and competency in maintaining confidentiality of client information according to FIPPA and PHIPA legislation.
- Strong knowledge of community mental health resources.
- Demonstrated ability to relate to students, staff and faculty in ways that build confidence and trust.
- Able to work in a highly diverse community with students from varied backgrounds and a variety of age groups, presenting with a range of difficulties and personal issues.
- Good judgment, sensitivity, flexibility, discretion and resourcefulness.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work professionally and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
Assets (Nonessential):
- Formal training/certification in two or more types of psychotherapy (e.g. cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, internal family systems, acceptance and commitment therapy, etc.) and in dual diagnosis/concurrent disorders.
- Trauma informed counselling experience, life coaching, mindful based therapies and alternative evidenced based therapies.
- Post-graduate experience developing, facilitating, measuring, and evaluating mental health groups and workshops.
- Experience working with post-secondary students and knowledge of university mental health resources.
- Fluency in a second language.

NOTES:
- Hours of Work: 8:45 AM to 5:00 PM for 3-4 days a week and 11:45 AM to 8:00 PM for 1-2 days a week
- During non-peak periods, there may be remote work 1 day per week (onsite 4 days). During peak periods, the incumbent will be expected to work on-campus 5 days per week. This expectation aligns with the demand from students for in-person health care services.
