Director of Financial Reporting and Control

Waterloo, Ontario

The Director of Financial Reporting and Control at Karis is a key role responsible for providing leadership in Finance, Accounting, Performance Reporting and Corporate Controlling. They oversee the financial management of all Karis Disability Services companies.

As a member of the Organizational Leadership Team, the Director of Financial Reporting and Control is involved in the development and implementation of strategic plans and new initiatives for the organization. They provide supervision, leadership and support to the employees of the Finance Department and its operation. The Director ensures compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and accounting standards of practice.



The Director of Financial Reporting and Control embraces the Christian Faith Foundation of the organization; ensures the Christian ethos and the Values, Vision and Mission permeate their job responsibilities; and personally commits to the expectations as outlined in the Statement of Faith.

Key Initiatives Include

  • Responsible to develop and deliver Christian faith-informed perspectives on Finance & Accounting issues and practices relevant to the organization.
  • Responsible to provide analysis and recommendations when Finance & Accounting standards and practices conflict or appear to conflict with elements of the Karis Disability Services’ Faith Foundation, Values, Vision and Mission or the interests of its membership.
  • Support the Faith Foundation and Christian Ethos of Karis Disability Services by leading and/or modelling prayer, devotions, and/or other Christian rituals or traditions, where appropriate.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee the preparation of financial statements and reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
  • Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits and address any audit findings.
  • Develop and implement internal control policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls, recommending improvements as needed.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture within the team.
  • Prepare and file all required government reporting e.g., for the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, Ministry of Social Services, etc.).
  • Support budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Oversee the implementation and maintenance of financial systems.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline and automate financial reporting processes.
  • Ensure data integrity and accuracy within financial systems.
  • Close coordination with the Director of Strategic Finance, on topics including financial reporting, revenue and margin planning, operating expense planning, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with appropriate legislation and oversee the financial systems throughout the department.
  • Provide department leadership and accountability to steward the Christian Ethos of the organization within the Finance Department.
  • Provide input to organizational Strategic Priorities and the development of the Strategic Plan.
  • Formulate department operating plans to achieve relevant outcomes identified in the Strategic Plan.
  • Participate as a member of the Organizational Leadership Team to provide recommendations to the Senior Leadership Team on Finance matters, policies, and procedures.
  • Report to the Senior Leadership Team on outcome measures toward meeting organizational outcomes.
  • Support the Faith Foundation and Christian Ethos of Karis Disability Services.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Must have experience leading complex Financial Management and Accounting planning processes in a mid to large size organization.
  • GAAP Expertise, strong experience interpreting accounting standards and dealing with the tax authorities.
  • Experience in a not-for-profit environment is an asset. 
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally in a leadership capacity.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to translate complex data into meaningful analysis for non-technical audiences.



Education And Experience

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent in Finance/Accounting/Business;
  • CPA designation is required.
  • 10+ years of experience in progressive roles in Accounting and Finance.
  • Prior experience with advanced accounting software and ERP systems.
  • Outstanding leadership skills with previous experience in people management.

Salary Range: $112,800 - $128,330
