The Government of Alberta's Ministry of Indigenous Relations, specifically in the FNMR (First Nations and Metis Relations) division and the MR/MSLR (Metis Settlements Land Registry) branch, offers a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful initiatives that strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities. Key Responsibilities Include
- Mapping Services: Create, update, and maintain both hard copy and digital maps, including subdivision plans for the eight Metis Settlements. Ensure data accuracy by regularly comparing aerial photography with existing maps.
- Database Management: Perform scheduled backups and system maintenance to keep the MSLR databases (AutoCAD and registered plan files) current and optimized for performance.
- Technical Advisory: Serve as the primary contact for oil and gas companies, land agents, and surveyors, providing clear guidance on survey requirements and subdivision processes. Interpret complex legal descriptions and assist Settlement staff with procedural advice regarding land division.
- Training and Support: Conduct training sessions for MSLR staff and Settlement Land Clerks on utilizing the database, recognizing land features, and interpreting aerial photographs, ensuring that all staff can effectively engage with spatial data.
- On-site Assessments: Carry out assessments of subdivided parcels in dispute, providing clarity on property lines and related survey requirements.

- Develop Self and Others: Trains Settlement Land Clerks on viewing and use of data in their Settlements database, how to recognize features on a parcel of land, how to look at aerial photographs and identify features, and how to use some tools.
- Creative Problem Solving: Assists Metis Settlement staff with procedural advice when, for example, they want to divide a section of land.
- Develop Networks: Provides advice on what is required on plans, policy regarding subdividing land, inaccessible areas, contact people and process.
- Build Collaborative Environments: Functions as contact for survey and oil/gas companies, and land agents charged with development of site, pipeline or resource development on Settlement

Relevant Experience
- Land Surveying and Mapping Knowledge: Land surveying, mapping, and understanding of aerial photography and GIS concepts.
- Proficiency in Software Tools: AutoCAD and ArcGIS, including experience in database software and systems design methodology.
- Interpretation of Legal Descriptions: Legal descriptions, examining survey plans, and calculating areas relevant to land management.
- Cartographic and Graphic Design Experience: Cartographic design, enhancing the visual representation of data and maps.
- Consultative and Research Skills: Conduct research and engage in consultative processes to resolve complex land use and natural resource issues.
- Knowledge of Relevant Legislation: Metis Settlement land administration legislation, policies, and procedures
Hours of Work
- 7.25 daily hours
- 36.25 weekly hours
- 8:15AM to 4:30PM (Monday to Friday)
- 9920 108 Street Edmonton (Forestry Building)
