As the Manager, Strategy (Aluminium), you will formulate and shape the Aluminium Go-to-Market Commercial strategy aligned with Commercial Strategy, Group Strategy and ESG objectives. The Commercial group is focused on maximizing the value of our products, growing value in the marketplace through partnership with the company’s customers, suppliers, product groups and Group functions. Headquartered in Singapore, and integrated with Rio Tinto’s assets, hubs, and offices globally, Commercial’s purpose is to provide the commercial insights to drive value along the mine-to-market value chain. Commercial incorporates and utilises the knowledge and capabilities of the global Sales & Marketing, Procurement, and Marine & Logistics organisations, supported by the Market Analysis, Commercial Treasury, and other functions, to ensure our approach to business is driven by a commercially astute and innovative mind-set.

Reporting to the Director of Go to Market and ESG Strategy, Atlantic, Marketing & ESG, Metals and Minerals, you will
- Lead teams of professionals who are industry and sector wide known to lead the strategic agenda in materializing possibilities
- Envision, create and syndicate internally and with teams on the metals and minerals Go To Market strategy for Aluminium
- Be the interface for the internal stakeholders on key strategic interactions, ensuring the strategies are well embedded in the way we develop offerings, the way we develop the market/customers and the way we differentiate ourselves via technical and innovative services
- Manage the Strategy & Planning process for Aluminium by working with the entire value chain to develop coherent and cohesive Go-To-Market Strategies by analysing commercial, industry, technical and financial data to support value creating business opportunities, decisions and strategic directions. This includes definition of product and service portfolios, distribution methods, key market and customer segments, customer value propositions, pricing policy, price setting and brand management activities.
- Generate cohesive thinking and constant feedback loop is created for the strategy via market development, technical marketing and product management; all insights should continuously develop the strategy
- Generate, identify, evaluate and build business cases for new Commercial opportunities and initiatives including but not limited to investment thesis and conviction for organic and inorganic growth
- Support senior and executive management on business reporting activities and synthesis of information for communication
- Create, join or enhance industry wide thought leadership movement
- Bachelor’s degree in Business or Equivalent is required. [MBA will be beneficial]
- Very strong strategic and commercial acumen with 8-10 years of prior experience in commercial strategy, consulting and/or investment analysis
- Ability to present strategic ideas in a simple and digestible manner
- Ability to effectively navigate ambiguity and change context to develop workable and sustainable solutions
- Influencing skills with the ability to translate strategic and technical content into actionable insights
- Possesses innate curiosity, observes empathetically and enjoys creatively-driven problem solving
- Ability in navigating and operating successfully in a matrix organization, with stakeholders’ engagement and business partnering skills being key requisites.
- Competencies in collaboration, listening, ability to receive and provide feedback in a positive manner and embodiment of RT behaviours will be required
- Ability to travel
- If applying for the Montreal location Fluent in French and English, both written and spoken. Rio Tinto is a global company and the duties of this position require daily collaboration with colleagues, teams or partners based outside Quebec.
- MBA
- Experience in aluminium / LME metals
- Prior experience in strategy consulting with one of the big 3 management consulting firms (McKinsey / Bains / BCG etc)
