AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Fluvial Geomorphologist for employment in Canada with experience in applied fluvial geomorphology. 

AECOM is continuing to expand its fluvial geomorphology expertise in both environmental and engineering projects. The successful applicant for the Fluvial Geomorphologist position will be a motivated individual, excited to contribute to the growth of the fluvial geomorphology practice area within AECOM across Canada.  The fluvial geomorphologist will work with AECOM’s fluvial geomorphologists, hydraulic engineers, and ecologists to deliver various stream restoration projects, including restoration of natural processes and habitat conditions, erosion control and fish passage improvements, assist with identifying hazards, and facilitate infrastructure improvements. 

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilize scientific principles, theories, practices, and existing technologies to develop solutions for technical problems with limited scope.
  • Collect and enter data and apply technical principles and theories.
  • Interpret and record data, conduct analyses, compare findings to relevant studies and local, provincial, and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Support or lead ‘Natural Channel Design’ and stream restoration projects, completing assessments on existing and proposed conditions to provide enhancement recommendations and design input.
  • Conducting detailed field investigations and assessments.  Including sediment transport and scour analysis.
  • Analyzing and interpreting geomorphic and hydraulic data.
  • Technical report writing.
  • Working collaboratively across offices and disciplines in Canada. Participate in meetings with clients and stakeholders.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g., geomorphology, river engineering, earth science).
  • The ability to travel (sometimes remote areas) and efficiently undertake field work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s level degree specializing in fluvial geomorphology would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with Natural Channel Design approaches, from concept development through to detailed design, construction implementation and monitoring.
  • Use of GIS and hydraulic model applications in study design and data analysis experience preferred.
  • Geohazard mapping and slope stability analysis.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with proposal writing and/or project management.
  • Strong detail-oriented work style.
  • Ability to manage personal project workload and meet deadlines.
  • Eligibility for membership (P.Geo. and/or P.Eng.)
  • Familiarity with GIS software and CAD software.
  • Knowledge of fluvial form, processes, and functions – including their dependence on local physiography and their influence on ecological habitats.
  • Experience with river and stream channel hydraulics and channel stability analysis.
  • Experience in environmental data collection, identification, investigation, data entry, and assessments.
  • Development of stream restoration and enhancement recommendations.
