Job Description

Our dynamic team is growing, and we have a new opportunity for a Senior Risk Assessor with 15 or more years of experience to work in a multi-disciplinary team that solves complex issues for our clients throughout Alberta. The position, based in Calgary or Edmonton, is with WSP’s Remediation Program Management (RPM) team which has offices across Canada.

You will lead a risk assessment team and provide input on a wide range of projects that would benefit from your risk assessment, toxicology or related expertise. What you can expect to do here:

  • Support and lead projects related to Contaminated Site Assessments & Remediation following Alberta and federal regulatory frameworks.
  • Conduct literature reviews on toxicology, environmental chemistry, public health and related topics.
  • Deliver on overall management of risk assessment tasks including planning, scheduling, resourcing, reporting and cost/scope tracking to ensure deliverables are provided on time and within budgets.
  • Undertake human health and/or ecological risk assessments related to exposure to soil, surface water, groundwater and air for a range of chemicals.
  • Prepare report summaries and/or critical analysis by applying a wide range of scientific disciplines to human health and ecological risk assessments, environmental impact assessments, and aquatic effects monitoring projects.
  • Conduct other environmental assessments and planning including baseline environmental investigations, preliminary site investigations, detailed site investigations as necessary.
  • Assist with the development of field programs for the collection of samples for chemical analysis.
  • Provide technical development, training, and support to junior staff.
  • Liaise with regulatory representatives to gain support and understanding of guideline modification methods.
  • Assist project managers in coordinating an efficient and effective assessment workflow between risk assessors and the other members of the site assessment team.
  • Develop internal/external client relationships.
  • Participate in procedure development.
  • Summarize and interpret field, laboratory and toxicological datasets, statistical analyses, and preparing written and graphical material for incorporating into reports and presentations.
  • Implement of quality assurance/quality control measures applicable to the task.
  • Prepare deliverables including proposals and reports.


What you'll bring to WSP...

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental, toxicology, or biological sciences, or related field .
  • Registered with relevant professional association (e.g., APEGA, ASPB, ACPA, AIA) or eligible for professional registration
  • 15+ years of relevant experience
  • A passion for working in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team environment, with strong interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience in conducting human health and ecological risk assessments.
  • Field experience advantageous.
  • Experience in the application of the Alberta standards (i.e., AEPA and AER) and federal CCME guidelines, and their derivation, with the ability to apply that knowledge to risk assessment.
  • Certification for Alberta Subsoil Salinity Tool.
  • Willingness to innovate and be part of improvement initiatives.
  • Great data evaluation skills, including statistical techniques, and a keen understanding of data quality requirements for large datasets.
  • Excellent report writing skills with the ability to integrate multi-disciplinary information to support project objectives
  • Good communicator who enjoys working on project teams and collaborating with teams from other disciplines.
  • A good understanding of the provincial (i.e., AB) and federal contaminated sites policy frameworks and the preparation of regulatory submissions
  • A valid drivers license; and
  • A proven commitment to health and safety.
