As the Senior Development Engineer reporting to the Coordinator, Utility Generalists, you are responsible for leading engineering practice improvements and quality assurance processes across the section. You will also focus on mentoring and the development of Engineers and Technologists to ensure consistent application of standards and requirements. You will also be responsible for issues management within the section, working with customers, industry partners, the Development Applications Review Team (DART), senior administration, and Councilor's offices to expedite and develop solutions for new developments. Primary duties include:

  • Provide guidance to staff in reviewing development applications including land use, outline plan, subdivisions, development permits and construction drawings.
  • Review complex, high profile, and/or politically sensitive development applications as a member of the Development Applications Review Team (DART).
  • Provide leadership on decision making and devise innovative and practical solutions to technical issues.
  • Ensure reviews are completed in a manner consistent with the City's customer service policy.
  • Work with customers, engineering consultants, Development Applications Review Team (DART) staff, senior management, and Councilor's offices to resolve development application challenges and address barriers to development.
  • Collaborate with internal and external groups to identify, lead, and implement process improvement projects to achieve desired business and customer outcomes more effectively and efficiently.
  • Act as a change agent within the Utility Generalist team to drive innovation.
  • Provide support to the Coordinator including at Public Hearings, Calgary Planning Commission, Subdivision and Development Appeal Board (SDAB), public engagement sessions and meetings with industry.


Qualifications

  • A degree in Engineering.
  • You must have at least 6 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. Designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work Click here for more details.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in land development and/or with the City of Calgary Development Applications Review Team (DART) or similar at another municipality.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing land use, outline plan, subdivision, development permit, or construction drawing applications is considered an asset.
  • Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to lead change and innovation and communicate effectively with multiple audiences. Well-developed mentorship and project management skills, as well as the ability to effectively manage staff to achieve the goals of a multi-dimensional work program, is essential for this position.
