Purpose

The purpose of this role is to develop, coordinate and deliver on Indigenous community engagement and consultation of activities that contribute to positive relationships with Indigenous peoples. The incumbent will focus on collaboration and open dialogue and will play a key role in agreement implementation and negotiations to support the site in achieving mutually beneficial outcomes with Indigenous communities. The incumbent acts as a resource within the Sustainability & External Relations Department as a key contact for Indigenous communities and employees on community relations and engagement in collaboration with other department as necessary. The incumbent maintains a high visibility at the Mine site and in the Communities by personally interacting with key leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee compliance of the Musselwhite and Mishkeegogamang Agreements and commitments are followed through with First Nations partners
  • Prepare and report on Indigenous community engagement plans and activities
  • Prepare workplans and propose budget allocations for indigenous engagement activities
  • Attend and participate in committee meetings defined in the Musselwhite Agreement and Mishkeegogamang
  • Educate interested individuals on the specifics of Mine training programs and what behaviours are expected of them. Produce and/or present pre-employment readiness programs in the Communities.
  • Provide direction and/or assistance to Community base resource employees when working with potential candidates to prepare resumes, complete job applications, and prepare for interviews.
  • Implement/organize a program to increase communities’ knowledge about career opportunities and establish career goals and pathways
  • Organize community career fairs and attend industry-related career fairs to promote Indigenous employment.
  • Assist in providing orientation, training and other employment support services targeting the unique needs of Indigenous employees.
  • Act as a key contact within the Sustainability & External Relations and HR Department for Indigenous employees to understand and interpret Company policies and programs.
  • Develop a working relationship with Mine Supervisors to provide assistance in resolving employee relations issues and promoting cultural awareness.
  • Identify and communicate employee needs and/or recommend modifications to employment practices and workplace procedures.
  • Support the advancement of the Indigenous Employment and Workplace Strategy
  • In cooperation with Supervisors, assist individuals to identify career goals, related training needs, and develop training plans. Monitor training progress and effectiveness.
  • Provide information regarding resources available to employees both at the Mine site and within their Communities for skills development.
  • Participate in the delivery of External Relations training (cultural awareness, smart work ethics etc.).

Requirements

  • 5 or more years experience working with Indigenous Communities.
  • 5 or more years experience in First Nations agreement implementation and negotiations.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Demonstrated Indigenous peoples cultural and business awareness, with ability to collaborate effectively with community leaders to build lasting relationships.
  • 5 or more years experience belonging to a Community government, tribal council or Indigenous political organization would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute effective community engagement strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak Ojibwe/Ojicree
  • Computer literacy (MS Office)
  • Presentation skills
  • Negotiation skills

Working Conditions

The schedule for this position is 4 days on 3 days off.
