About The Opportunity
The African Nova Scotian (ANS)/Black Patient Navigator is a resource for African Nova Scotians and Black clients seeking culturally safe client care within the Nova Scotia Early Psychosis Program. The Navigator helps build relationships with the African Nova Scotian and Black community health programs, NSH/IWK health, provincial health system partners, and services and community sites/clinics within the zone. They provide regular feedback and advice to NSEPP, Early Psychosis Intervention Nova Scotia (EPINS), and other Mental Health & Addictions (MHA) service providers within NSH to improve access to appropriate care.
The Navigator also supports and advocates for ANS and Black clients and their families by facilitating cultural/spiritual needs and networking with community partners that provide services to ANS and Black people. Their focus is to overcome barriers to timely and culturally safe care and enhance the delivery of high-quality, culturally safe, trauma-informed, and person-centered care. Additionally, the Navigator coordinates client referrals to and from appropriate health programs and services. They also provide consultative and advisory services to ANS and Black patients referred to NSEPP/EPINS programs and services, offering cultural interpretation and health literacy translation services to support competent and safe practice. The ANSBPN supports ANS and Black patients in communications with physicians, nurses, and other frontline care staff.

Compensation And Benefits
$33.96 - $42.89 Hourly

About You
We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
- Bachelor's Degree in a health professional discipline (e.g. Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Nursing)
- License/Registration with relevant discipline
- 3 years related experience is preferred
- Experience working with ANS/Black communities, ANS/Black service delivery organizations and applicable government programming
- Priority will be given to African Nova Scotian/Black applicants
- Demonstrated understanding, knowledge and experience working with ANS/Black culture, communities and organizations
- Extensive knowledge of ANS and Black demographics, languages, cultures, customs, and traditions
- Experience or knowledge of the health care system and community-based resources within the zone
- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and application of cultural safety and competency within healthcare
- Ability to use sound professional judgment, empathy, compassion, and integrity
- Ability to prioritize workload, keep accurate records and write reports, and adapt as the program evolves
- Ability to work independently and utilize strong time management skills to meet deadlines and accomplish objectives
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of Case Management, Recovery, Psychosocial Rehabilitation. Risk management and knowledge of the Criminal Code Review board (CCRB) would be preferred
- Proficiency with computer applications
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills including ability to work sensitively and effectively with clients, families, various professional and community agencies and partners in a collaborative team environment
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
