The Ministry of Indigenous Relations works with Indigenous communities, the federal government, industry and other stakeholders to support strong, vibrant Indigenous communities and people who fully participate in a prosperous, competitive and diverse Alberta. The ministry is also responsible for:
- Promoting social and economic opportunities for Indigenous Peoples
- Co-leading Indigenous training for all Alberta public servants
- Working with other ministries to develop opportunities for Indigenous Peoples to influence land and resource management decisions.

The First Nations and Métis Relations division consists of the First Nations Relations, Métis Relations. The positions being recruited to are for the First Nations Relations branch.
First Nations Relations builds government-to-government relationships with First Nations, which are formalized through protocol agreements that provide a framework for continued collaboration between the provincial government and First Nations in Alberta.
The branch also provides advice and specialized knowledge to provincial departments, federal and municipal governments and industry, and participates in cross-ministry strategies affecting First Nations people.
First Nations Relations is also responsible for economic development initiatives across the department and administers grants like the Aboriginal Business Investment Fund. The branch builds partnerships between Indigenous communities, organizations, industry, other levels of government and non-Indigenous organizations to enhance the participation of Indigenous Peoples in the economy, through the administration of programs in economic development, and oversight of the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation.
Role Responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced Manager to lead a team of up to five staff, driving strategic relationships between the Government of Alberta (GOA) and Indigenous communities. This role involves overseeing community assignments, managing Ministerial visits, and supporting capacity-building initiatives to improve outcomes for First Nations communities. The Manager will play a key role in aligning government strategies with Indigenous priorities while fostering a positive, collaborative work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership & Coordination: Manage a team of staff to deliver community-based initiatives and projects.
- Strategic & Engagement Advice: Provide strategic advice on Indigenous issues, engagement, supporting the Alberta government in meeting its objectives for First Nations communities.
- Stakeholder & Relationship Management: Foster and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with Indigenous community leaders, government agencies, and other organizations.
- Program Management & Capacity Building: Oversee the delivery and alignment of client-oriented programs.
- Resource & Financial Management: Foster transparency and accountability within the branch, ensuring appropriate financial reporting systems and operational goals are met.
- Strategic Planning & Reporting: Provide regular strategic updates, briefing papers, and recommendations to the Director, Executive Director, and senior leaders to inform decision-making.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirement: 4 years university graduation in a field related to the position (Business Administration, or a Social Science or Natural Resources Discipline, or a related discipline.) supplemented by four years related experience.
Equivalency: Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Relevant Experiences:
- Team Leadership: Managing diverse teams with varying education, cultural backgrounds, and work experiences.
- Stakeholder Communication: Communicating effectively with diverse stakeholders, adapting to different cultural and political contexts.
- Project Management Skills: Experience leading and coordinating multi-stakeholder projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with strategic goals.
- Knowledge of Indigenous Economic Development: Understanding of economic development programs, including those related to business investment, resource management, and community capacity building.
Assets:
- Indigenous Policy Knowledge: Familiarity with provincial and federal policies impacting Indigenous communities.
- Grant Management Experience: Experience managing or overseeing grant programs, including reporting and compliance.
- Experience with Protocol Agreements: Familiarity with the administration and implementation of Protocol Agreements between First Nations and government entities.
