Job Description

Engineering Manager - Montreal

To lead the activities of a design team for a project to ensure project objectives are met including technical solutions, time, budget and quality. Provide guidance, well defined targets and leadership to all engineering disciplines involved in the project through procedures, workflows and management plans. Set and influence the team culture to create a positive and productive work environment. Strong integration between Sedgman offices, JV partners, sub-consultants and clients across multiple time zones.

Support growth and market presence for Sedgman and establish a technical profile and network for new developments. Identify and support new opportunities through leading and innovative solutions focused on value.

Accountabilities

Design Management

  • Programme workloads to achieve project deliverables and milestones at the required quality.
  • Monitor and evaluate the work of engineers and design drafting staff allocated to the project to ensure that their technical competence and performance meet requirements.
  • Provide technical and administrative guidance to the Design Engineering staff.
  • Initiate, execute and issue reports for design reviews required for the project such as HAZOP, CHAZOP, Safety in Design, Design stage gate reviews etc.
  • Work in conjunction with Management around resource planning processes to ensure resource requirement for the project’s design are met.
  • Administer technical briefs for sub-consultant engagement.
  • Apply directives and processes of the Project Design Management Plan and review and update as required to achieve best for project results.
  • Coordinate design interfaces with the Client, JV partners and other technical contributors as required.
  • Manage Engineers / Designers to ensure authorisation and issue of documents and drawings to the project team, vendors, sub-consultants, statutory authorities and other as necessary.
  • Coordinate responses to technical queries from suppliers, contractors and other project staff in a timely manner.
  • Ensure strong and professional support to procurement in RFQ’s, tender evaluations and contract execution.
  • Identify, investigate, record, monitor and report on actions, resolution and costs of identified design non-conformances. Manage a strong Change Management register with clear and agreed outcome resolution.
  • Understand Sedgman standard specifications, typical/standard drawings, and calculations/simulations to reflect current industry standards.
  • Ensure compliance of project design team with the Sedgman’s ‘Design Management Systems’, including NCR’s.

Technology and Innovation

  • Drive solutions that increase the probability of winning each opportunity and allow delivery against our strategy
  • Identify suitable technical partners for advancement in innovation
  • Recognise and promote technical innovation through Value Engineering
  • Maintain awareness and consider the application of the Sustainability Guidelines as set out in the Engineering professional practice guidelines relevant to the region or country

Technical Leadership and Mentoring

  • Direct and lead process engineering and monitor design delivery to ensure outcomes support our technical leadership strategy
  • Actively mentor and create opportunities for knowledge sharing across the group
  • Select and monitor the performance of external consultants in the discipline.
  • Participate in the development and continuous improvement of the Quality management process and system.
  • Ensure Sedgman calculations/simulations, typical/standard drawings, and standard specifications to reflect current industry best practice.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Engineering.
  • Registered in a Professional Engineering designation (North America only)

Essential Skills, Knowledge And Experience

  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in process or chemical plant design.
  • Extensive knowledge on project design and execution practices.
  • Experience in leading and managing technical/project teams.

Desired Skills, Knowledge And Experience

  • Brine or Chemical processes plant and/or metals industry experience.
  • Experience in heavy industry environment.
  • Skilled in MS Office suite, MS Project.
  • Skilled in EDMS and digital design platforms such as Autodesk and ACC
