Summary of the Job Description
The Community Chef leads volunteers in preparing nutritious culturally diverse community meals. The candidate is responsible for delivering meal programs that improve access to good food while building relationships and capacity within community. They must have strong leadership skills and be able to create a supportive environment for a diverse team of volunteers including people of different cultures, seniors, and vulnerable adults and youth. The Community Chef is responsible for planning, ordering, and managing inventory of food, kitchen and cleaning supplies. The candidate will ensure a high standard of cleanliness and health and safety in the kitchen, support other team members in developing food programming, and engage in cooking demonstrations and good food advocacy.
Qualifications
- 3 years of experience with large scale food preparation & kitchen management
- Post-secondary degree in related field of study (such as culinary or nutrition), Red Seal an asset
- Demonstrated ability to plan and prepare healthy, delicious meals for up to 150 people
- Experience with budgeting, food sourcing, working with suppliers including local farmers
- Experience working in a leadership capacity with volunteers and community members
- Experience with program planning and evaluation an asset
- Demonstrated ability to move people from knowledge to action; ability to inspire, teach and empower community members to engage in positive change
- Demonstrated ability to work with and show sensitivity to those who experience poverty/discrimination; demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities
- Commitment to social justice and knowledge of food system issues
- Ability to work in a kitchen environment - including lifting, standing and carrying
- Safe food handlers and CPR/First Aid training required
Salary range $23.673-$27.445/hour (as per CUPE collective agreement)
