Description:

At Integrated Sustainability, you will have the opportunity to work closely with internal teams and external clients to ensure clients’ environment and regulatory issues and needs are being met. You will participate in all areas of our portfolio including waste, water and energy and in all project phases, from feasibility and planning, to detailed execution.


A key member of the Science and Consulting Team, the Regulatory Advisor role will have an exciting opportunity to support across regulatory and water resource projects and gain valuable experience in Project Management.


Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients and Integrated Sustainability team members in understanding regulatory issues that could affect a project and propose solutions to address them.
  • Identify, draft, review and submit regulatory applications.
  • Advise on the appropriate strategic approach for obtaining regulatory approvals and provide general guidance on approval timelines.
  • Maintain regular contact with key regulatory agencies to keep informed of upcoming policy changes.
  • Interact with clients to provide regulatory guidance.
  • Participate in industry and government forums to foster communication and advancement of knowledge of waste, water and energy.
  • Collect data and information from variety of public sources and analyze data to determine compliance requirements and regulatory pathways.
  • Review of regulatory applications (e.g. Water Act, Waste Management, etc.) and manage application requirements to secure full regulatory approvals as scheduled.
  • Conduct Environmental approval/license reviews.
  • Preparation of amendments for corrections to accurately reflect present operations.
  • Support environmental field work as required.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to junior staff.
  • Take an active approach to business development and networking.
  • Collaborate with technical and non-technical members of the Integrated Sustainability Team.
  • Manage projects across a broad range of industries and geographies.


Position Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 8+ years of proven experience with wetlands.
  • A degree from an accredited university in environmental, natural resource, or water management is preferred, or an equivalent combination of post-secondary training and work experience will be considered.
  • A registered professional or eligible for registration.
  • Regulatory knowledge in the mining industry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


Requirements:

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the AB and BC Water Act, Wetland Policy and Wetland Mitigation Directive.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements in Western Canada.
  • Knowledge and understanding of wetlands in British Columbia, including the Environmental Protection and Management Guideline, Water Sustainability Act, and associated regulations are considered an asset.
  • Willingness to do both field and in-office work.
  • Hydrology background is considered an asset. Experience in surface water, soils, and vegetation is considered an asset.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring for construction is considered an asset.
  • Initiative and accountability – self-starter, takes ownership and responsibility for work and actions.
  • Proven ability to multitask efficiently and flexibility to respond to changes in priorities.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills – ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining composure.
  • Ability to work on diverse, multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Experience with Alberta’s Water Act, Public Lands Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), as well as familiarity with AER Directives (e.g. # 023, 055, 058, etc.) and AUC Rule 007.
  • Experience with Construction Compliance.
  • Experience with Reporting Compliance Management.
  • Experience with developing bid proposals and estimates.
  • Develop and execute activities related to end-to-end project management, including project plans and estimates, scoping, and progress reports.
  • Build, strengthen and maintain client relationships.
  • Proactively monitor, manage and report on execution of deliverables.
  • Effectively manage multiple projects for various discipline groups.
  • Ensure project deliverables meet or exceed both client and internal expectations by implementing a deliverable quality assurance review appropriate to the project size and scope.
  • Communicate with clients, internal team members and support services to ensure alignment.
  • Proactively define and mitigate overall project risk through interaction with the project team and clients.
  • Actively participate in business development activities.
  • Coach and mentor team members.
  • Flexibility and the ability to manage change with excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.


In addition to the above requirements, the following are considered assets:

  • A professional designation or eligibility to register with an accredited organization as a Professional Biologist, Professional Agrologist or Professional Engineer.
  • Experience with obtaining Water Act (AB), Water Sustainability Act (BC), and/or Water Security Agency Act (SK) approvals.
  • Environmental Protection & Enhancement Act (AB), Environmental Management Act (BC), and/or Environmental Management and Protection Act (SK) experience.
  • Knowledge of Oil and Gas Conservation Act (AB), Directive 058 (AB), Directive 056 (AB), Oil and Gas Activities Act (BC), Management of Saline Fluids for Hydraulic Fracturing Guideline (BC), Oil and Gas Conservation Act (SK), and Pipeline Act (AB).
  • Knowledge of Public Lands Act (AB), Land Act (BC), and/or Provincial Lands Act (SK).
  • Experience with Permitting Produced Water Reservoirs.
  • Experience with US regulatory bodies, in particular Texas and California.
  • Strong relationship with regulatory bodies.
  • Business development skills, business analysis, strategic planning, project management, and/or consulting experience.
  • Knowledge of upstream and midstream processing and equipment.
  • Experience working in a collaborative development environment.
  • Experience with Environmental Assessments, including but not limited to, soils, vegetation, watercourse and wetlands.
  • Experience developing and implementing Environmental Protection Plans and Environmental Management Plans.
