We are looking for a Senior Government Relations Advisor to join our Government Relations team. This role will support the overall government relations strategy for all levels of the government. A Senior Government Relations Advisor plays an important role in managing the relationship between Nova Scotia Power and various government entities, while supporting the company's strategic goals. Building strong relationships and facilitating communication with government officials, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders will be a key element of this role.

Key Elements Of This Role Include

  • Provide day to day operational support to Elected Officials throughout Nova Scotia. These Elected Officials comprise of Federal Members of Parliament (MPs); Provincial Members of the Legislature (MLA’s); and Municipalities, comprised of Mayors, Wardens and Councilors.
  • Establish and maintain an open and responsive relationship with Federal, Provincial and Municipal Elected Officials. This requires ongoing communication including in person meetings and the coordination of NSP Leadership as applicable.
  • Maintain good relationships with key stakeholders enabling the Government Relations Advisor to have the ability to anticipate and avoid potential escalations, often including the need to work with cross functional teams and individual stakeholders.
  • Anticipate and shape opportunity around major corporate initiatives/projects and provide strategic support.
  • Track and measure activity by maintaining a Government Relations Dashboard and capturing and tracking action items complete with post meeting executive summaries.
  • Provide support and assistance to other members of the team.

  • Post-secondary education is required. Minimum Bachelor’s degree or Diploma.
  • A minimum of 5 - 8 years experience.
  • Exemplary verbal and written communications are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to interact with internal Senior Leadership and various levels of Government Officials
  • Advanced customer service skills as well as anticipating customer needs are required.
  • Strong computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite programs is required. Familiarity with Web DMD, Infoview, Crystal Reports and/or CIS is considered an asset.
  • Solid time management skills to balance multiple tasks in order to meet deadlines while managing competing/changing priorities is required.
  • Experience and motivation for process improvement is required.
  • Knowledge of the energy industry is an asset
  • Ability to have discrete/confidential conversations with government officials and be trusted with confidential information, as well as having an awareness of the municipal and provincial political and current events landscape.
  • Ability to trouble shoot and seek out information within the organization on various community issues that are being escalated by elected officials.
