Job Summary
Reporting to the Manger, Engineering the Component Engineer applies a life cycle management approach to select, qualify, approve, document and manage purchased components with the goal of reducing component availability risks and improving product reliability and quality. The Component Engineer is responsible for component obsolescence management, sourcing, selecting and verifying part substitutions and taking measures to prevent the procurement of counterfeit components. They will support ILS activity and Configuration.
Main responsibilities will include:- Provide DRS projects with technology selection, application and validation guidelines for electronic parts and packaging hardware and processes;
- Assess the reliability, availability and suitability of newly available electronic parts for DRS projects through validations, assessments and characterizations, and the development of test methods and tools;
- Retain and disseminate electronic parts, reliability validations, tools, and availability information to the DRS engineering community;
- Examine prime contract quality requirements and ensure appropriate Electrical, Electronic and Electromechanical (EEE) part Quality Assurance clause flow-down to suppliers;
- Participate in proposals and ensure appropriate component engineering effort estimating;
- Ensure component selection and derating practices comply with the project or company Parts Management Plan;
- Apply component engineering expertise to assist design engineering with component selection and application;
- Participate in peer and design reviews. Champion Design for Manufacturing and Design for Test practices;
- Place Quality Assurance clauses on EEE Parts; and
- Assist with DRS internal audits including assessing existing processes for efficiency and effectiveness
- Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution or equivalent years of experience;
- Minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated experience high technology electronics;
- Prior work experience in military/aerospace or telecommunications industry;
- Computer literacy and proficiency with various software applications including Microsoft Office Suite;
- Ability to read, interpret and assess compliance to quality standards ISO 9001, AS9100 and AS9145 and Component Engineering standards;
- Ability to read, interpret and assess company and supplier documented procedures and plans;
- Ability to assess supplier APQP maturity against AS9145;
- Knowledge of AS 9102, First Article Inspection (FAI) is an asset;
- Ability to flow chart processes, identify process inputs and output;
- Ability to assess, revise and if necessary and prepare Process Failure Modes and Effects (P-FMEA) analyzes an asset;
- Ability to identify Key Characteristics and prepare Process Control Plans (AS 9103) an asset;
- Ability to author process procedures and component plans;
- Ability to judge the importance of and disposition non-compliances;
- Ability to read and author Statements of Work (SOWs), purchase orders and/or subcontract Quality Clauses;
