The Student Engagement Coordinator is responsible to promote student engagement in the Booth UC community, support the needs of international students, support students generally as they transition into university, and serve as an effective member of the Student Services team supporting achievement of student retention goals.

SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS: Provides guidance and direction to several part-time student staff; gives leadership to members of the Student Council and supervises their activity. Note: responsibility for matters such as budget, discipline, staff supervision, and strategic planning rests with the Dean of Students.

This is a full-time position with 37.5 hours per week. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In cooperation with the Dean of Students, and other Booth UC staff and students, plan, implement, promote, monitor, and assess programs to increase student engagement and improve their sense of belonging within the Booth UC community.
    • Collaborate with others on campus to plan and execute events that promote Booth UC community engagement.
    • Provide leadership and guidance to the Booth UC Student Council, including event planning, managing the election process, providing leadership training, coordinating an annual Constitution review, and managing the Student Council budget and expenditures.
    • Provide leadership and guidance to the Booth UC Chapel Coordinator, including managing related licenses, streaming services, facility set-up, and promotions.
  • Advise international students at Booth UC, ensuring their smooth transition to Booth UC campus and culture, and supporting their needs throughout their degree program.
    • Support international students through their journey to Winnipeg and help them to settle well in preparation for studies at Booth UC.
    • Prepare a detailed orientation that will set international students on a path for success at Booth UC, including cultural adjustments, academic expectations, and settlement in Winnipeg.
    • Serve as the point person for international student supports on campus.
    • Communicate regularly with international students and develop feedback mechanisms to maintain good understanding of their needs and experiences.
    • Stay current on new government regulations and decisions that impact international students at Booth UC; advise the Dean of Students accordingly.
    • Coordinate specialized supports for visiting international students from Booth UC partner institutions.
  • In cooperation with the Dean of Students and other Booth UC staff, plan, implement, and evaluate an Orientation Program for all new students attending Booth UC at the start of each term.
    • Review and edit the Booth 100 Orientation Course together with the Dean of Students.
    • Plan programming to welcome new students to campus and become connected with the Booth UC community.
  • Provide guidance and direction to the Student Services Assistant in compiling information and resources to help students in the following areas:
    • Connect with meaningful employment opportunities.
    • Secure appropriate off-campus housing.
  • In cooperation with the Dean of Students and Communications Specialist, promote events, activities, and supports on campus that are of interest to the Booth UC student body.
    • Review the Student Services website and maintain its currency.
    • Communicate general interest items to the student body via Populi.
    • Manage social media accounts for Student Council.
  • Be available as an emergency contact to address urgent Booth UC student situations.
  • Participate in various committees including Safety Committee, Privacy Committee, and other committees as assigned.
  • Keep current on student services practices and trends, and relevant government regulations (e.g., immigration, safety, privacy, etc.).
  • Contribute to Student Services team initiatives and other activities and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Satisfactory criminal record check (vulnerable sector) (see note below)
  • Fully support the integration of faith and learning in a Christian university-level setting and a commitment to the Mission of Booth University College
  • Ability to integrate your Christian faith within the workplace
  • Must be valid to work in Canada
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., education, social work, behavioral sciences)
  • 3 years of related work experience
  • Event and program planning experience and/or training
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to facilitate conflict resolution effectively
  • Ability to lead teams and manage team activity effectively
  • Ability to plan and build support for new initiatives within the community
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to relate well with students in a post-secondary setting
  • Cross-cultural acumen and ability to communicate effectively to students of different ethnicities and cultures
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion, good judgment, and attention to privacy considerations
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when required

(Note: Job incumbent will be required to complete The Salvation Army Armatus training)

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) certification
  • Familiarity with a wide range of technology supported platforms to enhance communication and engagement virtually and online
  • Experience in a student services role in a post-secondary setting
  • Experience in a cross-cultural or inter-cultural setting
  • Current first-aid/CPR certification
