The Assistant Manager of Mechanical Maintenance reports to the Manager of Mechanical Maintenance, and works closely with other Facilities Managers, Stakeholders and Clients.

The key objectives are management of HVAC Minor Capital Projects, proactive maintenance, replacement improvements, and operations maximizing the life cycle of district buildings. Improving response and communication with schools’ while streamlining work processes. The Assistant Manager supports the Mechanical Department in the effective management of resources and assists in the development and implementation in alignment with the mission and goals of the Board of Education.

Responsibilities And Duties

Assisting with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Mechanical Department

Manages production of contract documentation and administers contracts including correspondence, plans and specifications, approval documentation, site instructions, notice of change, contemplated change orders, change orders, change directives, contractual notices, and invoices for Minor Capital Projects.

Assists in preparation of funding submissions to the ministry, project cost estimates, and project schedules.

Ensures satisfactory project completion within the authorized budget.

Works with other district staff, Maintenance Leadership team to plan, oversee and ensure completion of preventative maintenance schedules and other maintenance processes.

Supports department initiatives to control maintenance, labor and costs and initiates changes to optimize operations.

Physical site inspections and report creation.

Responsible for supervision and emergency response liaising with weekend user groups and / or contractors. May be required to attend emergency after hour callouts to sites during the week as well as on weekends.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Trade qualification in an appropriate field or relevant diploma related to facility or project management from an accredited institution, or relevant trades qualification supported by an appropriate combination of training and experience.

Minimum of two years experience in facilities or project management including two years in an administrative/leadership role.

Extensive working experience in the Mechanical/HVAC/Plumbing Field with a strong technical background.

Strong, clear, concise communication skills, analytical skills, and report writing capabilities.

Exemplary problem-solving skills. Ability to problem-solve quickly and seek creative solutions to difficult problems.

Extensive project management experience. Demonstrated initiative and the ability to effectively prioritize projects.

Assertive, strong negotiation skills.

Excellent managerial, interpersonal, and dispute resolution skills.

Considerable knowledge of principles of facility management, building management, asset management and life safety.

Proficient knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, building construction, automation and mechanical designs are considered an asset.

Ability to work in a complex, multi-union, public sector environment.

The ability to provide leadership working in a changing organizational environment.

Proficient in related computer applications: word, excel, outlook and web-based systems along with other applicable software applications.

DDC knowledge would be an asset.

Thorough knowledge of construction and maintenance trades, Provincial and municipal codes, and bylaw and knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Software and demonstrated ability to use other computer technology.

Familiarity with contract tendering and management, budget planning and control, as well as building security systems.

A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license.

The salary range for this position is: $90,291 to $112,864 per year with comprehensive benefits package and Municipal Pension.

Placement in the salary range is determined by an assessment of qualifications and ability to meet the key requirements of the job, and consideration of internal equity comparisons.
